Quick answers to the questions we get most often: 

Do I have to volunteer?
No, but we can't open the pool without volunteer help. We depend entirely on volunteers to open and close the pool, and every season we need new keyholders to take on roster duties each week during the season. The roster spreads the load so everyone can enjoy the pool safely.

Can I share my pool key with friends or extended family?
No. Each key is registered to one individual or family/household only. Sharing keys or lending them to others breaches the Keyholder Agreement and may result in the key being withdrawn.

What if I lose my key?
Please either send a WhatsApp message or email the Swim Buddies team as soon as possible at GBHSSwimBuddies@gmail.com. A replacement key may be arranged. A small replacement fee may apply.

How do I know when I’m rostered on?
The roster is shared by email, to our WhatsApp groups, and eventually posted here on the website and updated regularly. Volunteers can contact other volunteers and share updates via the WhatsApp group or email. If you can’t do your shift, please contact your back up support or request help from the wider volunteer group.

What happens if the pool closes temporarily?
The GBHS school Facebook page is the ultimate source of news regarding pool closure. As soon as we know we will try to notify keyholders by email or WhatsApp if there’s a closure due to weather, maintenance, or safety reasons. Please always check before swimming.

When does the season start and finish?
The pool usually opens in late October and runs through March, depending on weather and school activities. Exact dates are confirmed each year.

Who manages the Swim Buddies group?
Swim Buddies is run by community volunteers in partnership with Golden Bay High School. Together we keep the pool accessible, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.

Do we offer swim lessons?

No, we don't offer swim lessons, but Golden Bay Swimming Inc. offers swim lessons and squads at the GBHS pool for children aged 8-18. For details visit their website at www.goldenbayswimming.nz 

When and where do I return my key?

At the end of the season (or before if you wish), please return your pool key to the school reception during school hours (9:00 AM -3:00 PM) or place it in the school mailbox by the Hall entrance off Meihana Street by 1 May 2026.
