This page discusses me. How I learnt graphic design and it's various elements (color theory, scale, balance, typography, layout, etc.), what work experience do I have and how I landed those jobs.
Simply put, I am a student (both in the sense that I am still in school and that I am constantly learning new things). I am 15 years old and have been honing my craft of graphic design for 3 years now (starting with designing my uncle's ice cream parlor logo and now to packaging that will be seen all over Nigeria).
Through all my paid work, I managed to earn 200$ (78,100 Naira ) which I proceeded to donate to the arbor day foundation as a part of their team trees project. Somewhere in the world, there are 200 trees that I was responsible for. I am like most teens in the sense that I spend most of my time on YouTube, Instagram and Netflix but I manage to find time in the day to practice this skill that I am so passionate about.
For the most part, I am self taught. I learnt by watching YouTube videos and playing around with my computer. I am yet to take any official courses to hone my craft (although, I do plan on studying graphic design in college.) I also do have to add that apart from work, I spent hours on my computer just making random and meaningless graphics. Some of the best can be seen in the knick-knacks part of my work. All that experience has now led me to understand the fundamentals and how to use them.
Note : I did also take initiative in school designing posters whether that be promotional (bal mela) or informative (the negative peer pressure poster outside 10 C during the middle of the year 2019-20)
Most of the work I got was from companies that they were associated to. This made the process easier but I still had to make connections in the company with the graphics department so that I could work with them. Here, my skills were put to a test and I had to prove that I was capable of doing that job.
Swipha (My mom is the financial director) - I did most of my internships here where I worked under the graphics team (Mr. Mayowa and Mr. Peter). That is when I created the promotional videos which you can see on this website. I was also asked to design the LeapSwipha logo for a project that my mom was heading.
Bonway (My dad is the project manager) - My dad knew that I had a knack for design and so asked me to select the best logo out of the 6 options provided by their designers. After I chose one, he insisted that I recreate it to look more like the CWAY logo.
Hari Dosa & Krazy cups (Family owned businesses) - I took initiative and designed content for them. Since they were pleased with my work, they decided to adopt it.
All others (Fiverr) - During the summer between grade 8 and 9 (when I was 13), I saw a video about how to earn money online by writing articles. Turns out the method shown was to offer to write articles for money on a platform called Fiverr. At the time, they let people above the age of 13 to offer services. I instantly filled out their extremely lengthy form and submitted it. 8 days later (6th May 2018), I got my first order from My Tshirt Flashes (A London based flashing t-shirt company). After doing a bit of work for them, we decided to contact each other through WhatsApp and they became a regular buyer. In fact, I am still in touch with the owner of that company. I also had other orders coming in through Fiverr.
