The Village of Romeoville is a dynamic and growing community of 4000 residents. Romeoville's business climate has never seen a more positive environment. Romeoville is a city with a balanced economy as well as a dynamic business atmosphere.
According to the census of 2010, Romeoville encompasses a total area of 18.759 square miles (48.59 km2). From this total, 18.44 square miles (47.76 km2) comprises 98.3 percent of land. The remaining 0.319 sq miles (0.83 km2), which accounts for 1.7 percent and is water. The active community is bordered by neighboring areas like Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Crystal Lawns, Crest Hill, Lockport, and Lemont which places it strategically inside Will County.
A rich and fascinating history, Romeoville was one of the last regions in Will County to be settled by Native Americans. The town of Romeo saw its first settlers on the 14th of September 1835, located on Isle a La Cache, an island that was located within the Des Plaines River. Notably, the first bridge constructed during this period facilitated getting to the island via the bank on the west. The construction of the I&M Canal in 1848 attracted new residents. By the 19th of January, 1895, the village was incorporated and rebranded as Romeoville. Alongside Joliet it was soon referred to as "Stone City," reflecting its prosperous limestone quarries, with its Illinois State Capitol featuring Romeoville limestone.
Over the years, Romeoville evolved significantly, particularly from its solitary population of 1950, which contained just 46 homes and 147 inhabitants. A turning point occurred in the year 1957, with the creation of the Hampton Park Subdivision, leading to a gradual increase in population. The opening of the initial I-55 interchange at Weber Road on October 5 in 1990, brought Romeoville with the Chicagoland area, paving an avenue for suburbization. In the 90s and 2000s, Romeoville was one of the most rapidly growing communities in Illinois, witnessing an influx of over 25,000 new residents within two decades.
Tragically, recent incidents have raised awareness of the challenges facing our community. In a shocking incident on September 16-17, 2023, a four-member family consisting of two adults and two kids was brutally murdered during a massacre at their Romeoville home, and their three dogs also suffering the loss of their lives. Authorities classified the act as an attack targeted. The suspect, 31-year-old Nathaniel Huey Jr., was tracked down in Oklahoma several days later. After a haphazard turn when a police officer stopped him, he fled, eventually taking the life of his fianc?e prior to ending his own.
