According to the 2010 census, Romeoville encompasses a total area of 18.759 square miles (48.59 km2). The majority of this area, 18.44 square miles (47.76 km2) is 98.3% land, while 0.319 square miles (0.83 km2) of it, or 1.7% of the area, is water. The active community shares borders with neighboring regions like Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Crystal Lawns, Crest Hill, Lockport, and Lemont which places it strategically inside Will County.
Rich in history, Romeoville was among the last regions in Will County to be settled by Native Americans. The town of Romeo was first settled on September 14, 1835, at Isle a La Cache, tiny island located within the Des Plaines River. The first bridge built during the period allowed getting to the island via the bank on the west. The construction of the I&M Canal in 1848 attracted new residents. By the 19th of January, 1895, the village was established and was renamed as Romeoville. Alongside Joliet, it became renowned as "Stone City,"" in reference to its flourishing limestone quarries. It also has the Illinois State Capitol featuring Romeoville limestone.
In the course of time, Romeoville evolved significantly, particularly from its solitary population in 1950, which was home to just 46 houses and 147 inhabitants. The pivotal moment came in 1957 when the construction of the Hampton Park Subdivision, leading to gradual population growth. The opening of the initial I-55 interchange at Weber Road on October 5, 1990, connected Romeoville with the Chicagoland region, opening the way for suburbanization. In the 90s and in the 2000s Romeoville was one of the most rapidly growing communities in Illinois experiencing an influx of 25,000 residents within a span of two decades.
Tragically, recent incidents have brought attention to the problems facing the community. In a shocking incident on 16-17 September 2023, a four-member family, including the two parents and kids was brutally murdered in a mass shooting at their Romeoville home, and their three dogs also losing their lives. Authorities have classified the crime as an act of targeted violence. The suspect, 31-year-old Nathaniel Huey Jr., was found in Oklahoma several days later. A mishap occurred during a traffic stop, he escaped, taking the life of his fianc?e prior to ending his own.
