The Village of Romeoville is a dynamic and growing community of more than 40,000 people. Romeoville's business environment has never had a better time. Romeoville boasts a well balanced economy as well as a dynamic business environment.
Based on the census of 2010, Romeoville encompasses a total area of 18.759 square miles (48.59 km2). The majority of this area, 18.44 square miles (47.76 km2) is 98.3% land, while 0.319 sq miles (0.83 km2) of it, or 1.7 percent, is water. The vibrant community is bordered by neighboring areas like Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Crystal Lawns, Crest Hill, Lockport, and Lemont which places it strategically inside Will County.
Rich in history, Romeoville was among the regions of Will County to be settled by Native Americans. The village of Romeo had its first settlers on September 14, 1835, at Isle a La Cache, a small island in the Des Plaines River. Notably, the first bridge constructed during the period allowed access to the island from the west bank. The construction of the I&M Canal in 1848 brought new residents. By January 19, 1895 the village was established and rebranded as Romeoville. Alongside Joliet it was soon referred to as "Stone City," reflecting its prosperous limestone quarry, and the Illinois State Capitol featuring Romeoville limestone.
Through the years, Romeoville evolved significantly, particularly in comparison to its small population in 1950that contained just 46 homes and 147 people. The pivotal moment came in 1957 with the development of the Hampton Park Subdivision, leading to a gradual increase in population. The opening of the initial I-55 interchange at Weber Road on October 5 1990, linked the village to the Chicagoland region, opening ways for the suburbanization process. Through the 1990s and the 2000s, Romeoville was one of the most rapidly growing communities in Illinois, witnessing an influx of more than 25,000 new residents in just two decades.
Tragically, recent events have drawn attention to the community's challenges. In a shocking incident September 16-17, 2023, a family of four, including the two parents and kids were tragically killed during a massacre at their Romeoville home, with their three dogs also losing their lives. The authorities classified the incident as an act of targeted violence. The suspect, 31-year-old Nathaniel Huey Jr., was located in Oklahoma several days later. After a haphazard turn during a traffic stop, he escaped, taking the life of his fiancee prior to ending his own.
