The Village of Romeoville is a dynamic and expanding community of 4000 residents. Romeoville's business climate has never had a better time. Romeoville is a city with a balanced economy as well as a dynamic business atmosphere.
According to the 2010 census, Romeoville encompasses a total area of 18.759 square miles (48.59 km2). The majority of this area, 18.44 square miles (47.76 km2) comprises 98.3 percent of the land area, and 0.319 sq miles (0.83 km2) of it, or 1.7 percent of the area, is water. This active community shares borders with neighboring regions like Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Crystal Lawns, Crest Hill, Lockport, and Lemont and is strategically located inside Will County.
Rich in history, Romeoville was among the last regions in Will County to be settled by Native Americans. The village of Romeo had its first settlers on September 14, 1835, at Isle a La Cache, a small island in the Des Plaines River. The first bridge constructed in this time allowed access to the island from the west bank. The construction of the I&M Canal in 1848 attracted new residents, and by the 19th of January, 1895, the village was incorporated and rebranded as Romeoville. Alongside Joliet, it became renowned as "Stone City," due to its thriving limestone quarry, and Romeoville being home to the Illinois State Capitol featuring Romeoville limestone.
In the course of time, Romeoville evolved significantly, particularly from its solitary population of 1950, which was home to just 46 houses and 147 inhabitants. The turning point came in 1957 when the construction of the Hampton Park Subdivision, leading to gradual population growth. The opening of the first I-55 interchange on Weber Road on October 5, 1990, connected the village to the Chicagoland region, opening the way for suburbanization. Through the 1990s and the into the decade 2000, Romeoville has been one of the communities that grew fastest in Illinois, witnessing an influx of more than 25,000 new residents in just two decades.
Tragically, recent incidents have raised awareness of the challenges facing our community. In a shocking incident September 16-17, 2023, a four-member family, including 2 adults as well as two kids was brutally murdered in a massive shooting at their Romeoville residence, with three dogs also dying. Authorities have classified the crime as a targeted attack. The suspect, a 31-year-old Nathaniel Huey Jr., was found in Oklahoma just a few days after. After a haphazard turn when a police officer stopped him, he escaped, taking the life of his fianc?e before ending his own.
