Why Romeoville?
The Village of Romeoville is a thriving and growing community with 40,000 residents. Romeoville's business climate has never had a better time. Romeoville boasts a well balanced economy and a thriving business environment.
Based on the census of 2010, Romeoville encompasses a total area of 18.759 square miles (48.59 km2). From this total, 18.44 square miles (47.76 km2) is 98.3% land, while 0.319 sq miles (0.83 km2), which accounts for 1.7 percent, is water. This vibrant community shares borders with neighboring areas like Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Crystal Lawns, Crest Hill, Lockport, and Lemont, positioning it strategically within Will County.
Rich in history, Romeoville was one of the last regions in Will County to be settled by Native Americans. The town of Romeo was first settled on the 14th of September 1835, located on Isle a La Cache, tiny island located situated in the Des Plaines River. The first bridge constructed in this time allowed accessibility to the islands from its west side. The completion of the I&M Canal in 1848 brought new residents, and by the 19th of January, 1895, the village was officially incorporated and changed its name to Romeoville. Alongside Joliet, it became renowned as "Stone City," reflecting its prosperous limestone quarries. It also has the Illinois State Capitol featuring Romeoville limestone.
In the course of time, Romeoville evolved significantly, particularly from its solitary population of 1950, which contained just 46 homes and 147 residents. The turning point came in 1957 with the development of the Hampton Park Subdivision, leading to a gradual increase in population. The opening of the initial I-55 exchange at Weber Road on October 5 in 1990, brought Romeoville with the Chicagoland region, which paved an avenue for suburbization. Throughout the 1990s and in the 2000s Romeoville has been one of the communities that grew fastest in Illinois and saw an increase of over 25,000 new residents in just two decades.
Tragically, recent incidents have raised awareness of the challenges facing our community. In a shocking incident on the 16-17th of September, 2023 a four-member family consisting of the two parents and kids was brutally murdered during a massacre at their Romeoville residence, with three dogs also suffering the loss of their lives. The authorities classified the incident as an act of targeted violence. The suspect, 31-year-old Nathaniel Huey Jr., was tracked down in Oklahoma just a few days after. A mishap occurred at a traffic stop he fled, eventually taking his wife's life before ending his own.
