The Village of Romeoville is a dynamic and growing community of 40,000 residents. Romeoville's business climate has never had a better time. Romeoville has a balanced economy and progressive business atmosphere.
Based on the census of 2010, Romeoville encompasses a total area of 18.759 square miles (48.59 km2). From this total, 18.44 square miles (47.76 km2) is 98.3% land, while 0.319 sq miles (0.83 km2) of it, or 1.7 percent and is water. The active community is bordered by neighboring areas like Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Crystal Lawns, Crest Hill, Lockport, and Lemont and is strategically located within Will County.
The rich history of Romeoville was one of the last areas in Will County to be settled by Native Americans. The village known as Romeo saw its first settlers on the 14th of September 1835, at Isle a La Cache, a small island situated in the Des Plaines River. The first bridge constructed in the period allowed getting to the island via the bank on the west. The construction of the I&M Canal in 1848 brought new residents. On January 19, 1895, the village was incorporated and rebranded as Romeoville. Alongside Joliet it was soon referred to as "Stone City," reflecting its prosperous limestone quarries, with the Illinois State Capitol featuring Romeoville limestone.
Over the years, Romeoville evolved significantly, particularly from its solitary population in 1950, which had just 46 homes and 147 people. A turning point occurred in 1957 when the construction of the Hampton Park Subdivision, leading to gradual population growth. The opening of the very first I-55 exchange at Weber Road on October 5 1990, linked the village to the Chicagoland area, paving the way for suburbanization. Throughout the 1990s and in the 2000s Romeoville became one of the fastest-growing communities in Illinois and saw an increase of more than 25,000 new residents within two decades.
Tragically, recent incidents have drawn attention to the challenges facing our community. In a shocking incident on the 16-17th of September, 2023 a four-member family comprising the two parents and kids was brutally murdered in a massive shooting at their Romeoville home, and their three dogs also suffering the loss of their lives. Authorities have classified the crime as an attack targeted. The suspect, a 31-year-old Nathaniel Huey Jr., was located in Oklahoma several days later. In an unfortunate turn when a police officer stopped him, he escaped, taking the life of his fiancee before ending his own.
