Why Romeoville?
The Village of Romeoville is a dynamic and expanding community of more than 40,000 people. Romeoville's business environment has never had a better time. Romeoville has a balanced economy and a thriving business environment.
According to the 2010 census, Romeoville encompasses a total area of 18.759 square miles (48.59 km2). From this total, 18.44 square miles (47.76 km2) makes up 98.3 percent of the land area, and 0.319 sq miles (0.83 km2) of it, or 1.7% and is water. This active community shares borders with neighboring regions like Bolingbrook, Plainfield, Crystal Lawns, Crest Hill, Lockport, and Lemont, positioning it strategically within Will County.
Rich in history, Romeoville was among the last regions in Will County to be settled by Native Americans. The village known as Romeo was first settled on the 14th of September 1835, at Isle a La Cache, a small island in the Des Plaines River. The first bridge built during this period facilitated getting to the island via the bank on the west. The construction of the I&M Canal in 1848 brought new residents. On the 19th of January, 1895, the village was established and rebranded as Romeoville. Alongside Joliet, it became renowned as "Stone City,"" due to its thriving limestone quarries. It also has the Illinois State Capitol featuring Romeoville limestone.
In the course of time, Romeoville evolved significantly, particularly from its solitary population in 1950that was home to just 46 houses and 147 residents. The pivotal moment came in the year 1957, with the creation of the Hampton Park Subdivision, leading to gradual population growth. The opening of the first I-55 interchange on Weber Road on October 5 1990, linked Romeoville to the Chicagoland region, opening an avenue for suburbization. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Romeoville became one of the fastest-growing communities in Illinois experiencing an influx of over 25,000 new residents in just two decades.
Tragically, recent incidents have brought attention to the challenges facing our community. In a tragic incident that occurred on 16-17 September 2023, a family of four, including two adults and two kids, was tragically murdered during a massacre at their Romeoville home, and their three dogs also losing their lives. Authorities classified the act as an act of targeted violence. The suspect, a 31-year-old Nathaniel Huey Jr., was found in Oklahoma several days later. In an unfortunate turn during a traffic stop, he escaped, taking the life of his fianc?e and ending his own.
