Introduction
In this Taal, there are 10 Beats (Matras). The Thali falls on the 1st, 3rd and 8th beat. The Khali (O) falls on the 6th beat. The Taal is divided into 4 divisions. This is also one of the most popular Taal in Hindustani Music.
This Taal is played on the Tabla as a solo or to accompany any instrumental Gat, Khayal and Kathak dance recitals. The Taal is mainly played in Madhya Laya. Peshkar, Kayada, Rela, Tukda, Paran and Chakradaar are played in this Taal. This Taal is an Ardh Sam-Pad Taal. The Chhand form of this taal is 2/3/2/3. \
When Dhrupad is sung in Jhaptaal it is known as Sadra. Mishra Jaathi Jhampa Taal of Carnatic music is a similar Taal with 10 matras. The Jaathi of Jhap Taal is Khanda.
