Keep an eye on this page for a calendar with this semester's mini-lesson schedule. In the meantime, watch this video announcement for some ideas while I'm away.

Writing Workshops

Feb 18, 2019

Drop in for the upcoming series of targeted Writing Mini-Lessons on different elements of the writing process.

These are all designed to take about 20 minutes and improve specific elements of your formal and informal written compositions.

It's Synchronous Session Time!

February 12, 2019

It's time for the new group of Gamified English 12 students to complete a Synchronous Session. This means we will all complete a task at the same time, rather than working individually or at our own pace (just like those synchronized swimmers to the right). This semester's first Synchronous Task will take place on THURSDAY, FEB 14. Using the story (pick this up from me in 102) and the Jigsaw Questions (located in the Synchronous Sessions Section of OneNote), read and prepare for a Demand Write in class on Thursday. If you've got questions, you know how to find me!

Exam Results

Exam results are published on the ministry website about a month after you have written.

You will need to know your Personal Education Number of your BCeID to log in and check your result.

Exam Definitions

Dec 21, 2018

Some of you are looking for a way to earn some XP while also feeling more comfortable going into the government exam (which is at 9am on January 24th). Check out this list of examinable terms and devices. You don't need to be able to define them on the exam, but they will show up in the multiple choice section, and you will need to be able to recognize and identify examples in the texts you are reading.

I recommend that you make flash cards or define each of these words, with an example, so that you can easily identify them. You can earn XP for creating the cards, and you will be able to use them to study in January!

Using The Matrix to Write a Synthesis Essay

Nov.19, 2018

Have you ever felt lost when it comes to writing a Synthesis Essay? Does the task leave you with more questions than answers?

Join in this week's challenge to open your eyes to using a Matrix to organize and synthesize your ideas.

Weekly Challenge #3

Nov 12, 2018

Things are about to get REAL in Gamified English 12. Real, as in, face-to-face. And with, like, paper and pens. *Gasp*

This is a HIGHLY recommended quest, as in, I think it will give you not only 300 base XP, but also experience you can carry forward into the dreaded (but really not that scary) exam AND into real life (especially if you're thinking of Post Secondary Education).

Trust me. Check it out here, bring your paper and pens to class tomorrow, and get ready to collaborate, communicate, and create your best paragraph yet.

Weekly Challenge #2!

Nov 4, 2018

ARE YOU READY TO COMPETE!?!??!

Naturally, you don't have to complete this to see if you win, so just let me know if you want to be considered in the running for the coveted "winner" prize, or if you'll just be working on this for XP :)

All the details are linked HERE - this week's challenge combines art, citation (see last post), and synthesis of ideas. GROUP or INDIVIDUAL. Have fun!

Citation

Embedding Citations

November 1st, 2018

Here are the slides I shared - in warp speed - in class today. You can review them, and also get information for the two short quests that will get you 20XP each.

If you do end up spending longer adding citations and reviewing an essay, let me know and you can definitely earn XP!

Weekly Challenge #1

Oct 29, 2018

Link to the challenging "Politics and the English Language" Quest here.

Remember, this is a difficult text, and much of your actual learning will happen by persisting and reading the whole thing!

Finish it by the end of the day Friday to practice working under time restraints!

Badges? Badges!

Oct 10, 2018

Earn coveted badges for demonstrating key skills and understandings in English 12. The rarer the better!

You can also use your digital art skills (or a free app like Adobe Spark, which is what I have been using) to create your own badges as part of the recurring quest linked HERE.

New Quest Chain Navigation Layout

Sept 29, 2018

I got some great feedback from a student, and as a result, I have changed the navigation for the Quest Chain on the website. Now, instead of seeing the 5 required intro quests in the drop down menu, you will see the 6 Big Idea categories, plus the Heavy Hitters.

This should speed up your navigation and reduce the amount of scrolling you need to do. Also, I added an Announcements page, so keep your eye peeled for new additions. This is where I will announce newly added quests, address questions that are important for everyone to know the answers for, and generally keep you up to date.

Happy Saturday!
