The social media project allowed me to see how social media, something so prevalent in our everyday lives, impacted the world and myself.
According to the test, I am reliant on social media but not as bad as many people. This makes sense to me, while I'm rarely on apps where I'm socializing with people, I am often on YouTube watching video essays, educational videos, commentary, or videos related to my special interests. I used to be much worse, spending hours on apps like TikTok and Twitter, but I no longer put myself through that torture.
I thought it would be interesting to see the effects social media has on teens, the demographic that appears to use social media the most. What I was most interested in was discovering how addicted teens were to using it, and how easy they found it to take themselves away from it. The article goes as follows, "Teens are relatively divided over whether it would be hard or easy for them to give up social media. Some 54% say it would be very or somewhat hard, while 46% say it would be very or somewhat easy. Girls are more likely than boys to say it would be difficult for them to give up social media (58% vs. 49%). Older teens are also more likely than younger teens to say this: 58% of those ages 15 to 17 say it would be very or somewhat hard to give up social media, compared with 48% of those ages 13 to 14." To me, that's shocking; over half teens make the acknowledgment that it would be very hard to give up social media. That's not even taking into account the fact that those who are addicted often claim getting off is way easier than it actually is. So if over half of teens are open in that reflection, it truly is alarming.
Social media has done something unbelievable to the world; like never before, we are connected in every imaginable way. From the tap of a button, we can share practically anything we desire, consume anything we desire, it's a stream of engagement in everything, everywhere, all at once. As one could imagine, that's good and bad (I'd mostly say bad). While there are major benefits to being able to reach out to anyone around the world through the push of a button, the negative side-effects outweigh it all, to the point that we don't even know how bad it is for the mind. The idea that anything we want is always at our fingertips numbs us, the fact that there is so many things out there pulling in our attention is assuming us to death. We are stuck in this perpetual cycle of dopamine hunting that considering there is so much, we never run out, ande continue to search further and further to soothe our interests. While not having as detrimental side-effects as addictive substances, social media is almost parasitic in its feast for your attention. Once you stop, its very hard to break free.
Throughout this project, I got a better understanding of both myself and the world around me. Through this research on social media addiction, I could even furthing see how detrimental it is to our health. Also, it offered a personal reflection, causing me to look in through my personal addictions to social media.
