We’re G4CSE, a diverse team of passionate girls from Granada Hills Charter High School, excited about bettering the world around us. G4CSE’s mission is to fight for equality in computer science through enriching events such as hackathons, panels, field trips, and bonding socials. CS is a field built upon different perspectives, but how can we represent everyone’s opinions with the startling lack of diversity?
GHCHS is a Title I school, meaning at least 40% of our students are from low-income families. Our students come from various socioeconomic statuses, genders, races, and more. Out of the 1200+ first-year high school students at GHCHS, we aim to target middle and high school students from traditionally underrepresented demographics in CS. They still have the opportunity to take engaging CS classes such as AP CSP or AP CSA if they demonstrate an interest in computer science through the activities we offer.
We plan to host a two-day online hackathon for middle and high schoolers identifying as female or nonbinary individuals. Participants would be divided into the beginner or intermediate division based on previous computer science experience. Within these divisions, they’d form teams of up to 4 members and spend the day creating a hack on our theme of games. They can create any kind of game they want, whether it’s for leisure or social justice, the possibilities are endless! In addition, the hackathon will be completely online, and we will be mailing the awards to the winners! We also plan to host 2 coding workshops throughout the day, where interested participants can listen in on guest speakers take them through helpful coding concepts.
G4CSE is filled with committed, eager girls ready to address the knowledge and confidence gap in CS!
