About us

The 'Grow 10 Trees' Project (G10T) was created as a response to the passive stance often taken by the general public regarding environmental threats in the Maltese Islands, particularly those posed by authorities that should be safeguarding the environment.

The 'Grow 10 Trees' Project targets proactive citizens willing to grow and nurture at least 10 local trees or plants, hence the name, which contribute to afforestation projects within the Maltese Archipelago. Over the years, more than 4,000 saplings have been planted, primarily grown by the general public.

Since its inception in May 2017, G10T has refined its operations and adjusted its targets to remain relevant to the country's environmental needs. While maintaining its main actions, G10T has increased efforts to propagate local flora due to the limited availability of local species, as commercial nurseries typically focus on imports rather than propagation of local genetic species. This effort was made possible in May 2021 when G10T received permission to utilize part of the extensive fields surrounding D-Dar tal-Kleru in B'kara. This expansion has turned G10T into one of the leading nurseries propagating local species from local seeds.

The establishment of this full-scale nursery has allowed G10T to enhance its educational initiatives. Volunteers from the general public, along with students from secondary schools, 6th Form Schools, and MCAST, engage in volunteering opportunities that promote social responsibility skills. G10T also accommodates students following the Systems of Knowledge syllabus who choose to participate as part of their project requirements. Additionally, G10T receives requests from private entities to host Corporate Social Responsibility events, either within the nursery or in collaboration with other organizations.

Looking ahead, G10T plans to further expand its educational branch by constructing an educational hall within the nursery. This facility will enable G10T to host students of various ages for hands-on, in-depth sessions focused on the importance of the environment and local flora. The hall will also cater to adult audiences.

The culmination of G10T's initiatives will be the creation of a botanical garden showcasing hundreds of local flora species categorized into distinct habitats, the only one of its kind in Malta. This garden will be open to the public during designated hours and will complement G10T's educational programmes.

Through this website, visitors will find extensive information about various local flora, including guidance on propagation, planting techniques, and optimal sowing times. The 'Grow 10 Trees' Project is designed for anyone passionate about local trees and plants who can allocate even a small area in their garden, yard, or balcony for cultivation.

Although identifying suitable planting areas can be challenging, the most significant obstacle remains finding entities willing to embrace the challenge of planting on their premises or within their locality and committing to the ongoing care of the saplings to ensure their success.

G10T has undertaken numerous initiatives and projects since its launch, collaborating with NGOs, educational institutions, local councils, and schools. A comprehensive list of these activities can be found in the Past Events   section of this website
