What is Future City?

What is the Future City and the Final Competition?

40,000 students in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th work in teams with their engineer mentor and educator to imagine, design, and build cities of the future. Along the way, they learn about the STEM sciences especially the "E" in STEM for engineering. They develop software skills such as writing and public speaking, teamwork, and they apply math and science to solve real world issues.

The Future City program occurs during the fall semester. Teams build a Future City that is set 100 years in the future, then at the regional competition, they present their work to a panel of industry engineers and educators.

Each year the focus or theme of the program changes, This year’s theme is “Powering Our Future” and it centers on designing an electrical grid that can withstand and recover from a natural disaster. The winning team for the North Carolina Regional Competition will compete at Nationals in Washington, DC during President’s Day weekend.
