Finding Lunch

To state the obvious there are two options; lunch on campus or off campus. The lunch break is 12:30 - 14:15 and so should give ample time to get food outside campus for the more adventurous. However there are some good options on campus which are convenient. Details for both on and off campus are below...

Finding Lunch on Campus

There are numerous food outlets on campus. The main food area is in the Sherfield Building (West) - highlighted in the dark red ring in the map below. This is accessed via the Sherfield Walkway. The dotted red lines show routes from the Blackett front entrance. Confusingly this walkway is one level above ground, and very confusingly corresponds to level 3 of the Blackett lab.

Walking along the Sherfield Walkway away following the dotted lines away from Blackett (ie. ~ East) you pass (1) on your right large glass double doors to a hall way, then you pass (2) the Senior Common room and then (3) the Junior Common room. Continuing further takes you to the open Dalby court area, and following across that, the main entrance to the campus.

Food outlets;

Senior Common room (SCR)

Sit down food, the default place to eat if you want a hot meal; a canteen style accessed to the left as you enter the SCR from the Walkway

Senior Common room cafe

Good coffee and sandwiches for something lighter; found to the right as you enter the SCR from the Walkway

Junior Common room (JCR)

In this area there is an excellent and remarkably fast Japanese style takeout; don't be put off by a queue, they are super-efficient.

h-bar

This is harder to find, but good hot food and a nice area to eat in. It is also a bar in the evening. Entering the large glass doors to the hall way of Sherfield (West), so (1) above, there are stairs ahead to your right. Go down to the ground level of the hall. Look around and you should see a sign for h-bar, which is accessed through a door off that lower level. (It is on the side opposite the lifts, and not immediately obvious to spot).

Fusion

This is situated between the SCR and JCR on the Sherfield Walkway. It is relatively quick and cheap and serves takeaway curries and pasta, as well as sandwiches.

There are several other cafes on campus -- notably there is one near the main entrace to the campus in Dalby court.

There are tables, benches and a lawn next to the Queen's Tower where one can sit and eat takeaway food.

Finding Lunch off Campus

There are numerous cafes and restaurants within a 15 minute walk from the Physics department. There are two main areas to explore shown in the map below.

1) There is the area on Gloucester Road which lies approximately West of the campus. There are cafes here, sandwich shops, pubs, and sit down restaurants.

2) A relatively new and very lively pedestrian area near the South Kensington tube station has many cafes and restaurants.

Beyond these two areas there is also:

3) The beautiful Hyde park is a ~ 5-10 minute walk North and is a lovely location to eat sandwiches, takeaway food etc... It also has two sit down cafe/restaurants (the Sepentine Lido and the Serpentine Bar and Kitchen) on the lake Serpentine. You can also swim there at the Lido if you fancy a dip!

4) Kensington High street is a short walk from campus and also has many food options, including a Wholefoods.
