Our Project

The Fitchburg Abolitionist Park celebrates the men and women of Fitchburg who fought for the abolition of slavery. It serves to educate anyone who visits the park about the Abolitionist Movement specifically within their own community of Fitchburg. This park will honor diversity, equality, freedom and be a space to bring people of all backgrounds together to celebrate these things.

After the past year, the Black Lives Matter movement has gained many new supporters and opened the eyes of thousands of people around the world. This imperative movement is one that needs to be continued until equality and equity are finally achieved. The Fitchburg Abolitionist Park focuses on the prominent historical figures that helped this country abolish slavery.

Educating citizens of all ages on these people from their very own community and their impact is essential. These heroes should be remembered and celebrated for their courageous actions. This project directly aligns with the Fitchburg State Service Learner’s objective as we are building and supporting our local community while also addressing global issues.

Facts About Juneteenth

  • Juneteenth is also referred to as Freedom Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day. It is a holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in America, specifically the day Union Major General Gordon Grander traveled to Galveston, Texas to officially announce the emancipation of slaves.

  • “The official date of the holiday is June 19, celebrating and recognizing June 19, 1865, when Union Major General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and told slaves about their emancipation from slavery. Governor Baker signed the holiday into law in 2020, to help "recognize the continued need to ensure racial freedom and equity." June 19 is the oldest known date celebrating the end of slavery in the US.”

  • Alongside holidays such as Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth is furthermore observed as a paid, legal holiday in Massachusetts
