Coolidge Park includes walking trails, a splash park, baseball fields, a dek hockey rink, a playground, and a dog park.
There are many more parks and playgrounds throughout the city such as: Riverfront Park, Parkhill Park, Caldwell Park (Hellenic Memorial Park), The Bartley-Nolan Park, The Lowe Playground, Monument Park, Moran Field, Nikitas Field, Crocker Field, Crocker Playground, Phillips Playground, Daniels Park, Gateway Park, Sadie Quatrale Park, Goodrich Park, South Fitch Playground, The Green Corners Playground (JoAnne "Mama" Fitz Playground), Heritage Park, Haworth Park, The Upper Common, and The West Fitchburg Steamline Trail Park.
Fitchburg is located adjacent to the MA-2 Massachusetts state highway, providing easy access to neighboring towns such as Leominster, as well as leading directly into Boston.
Fitchburg has a population of approximately 40,000 diverse residents. About 62% white, 29% Latino or Hispanic, 5% African American, 2% Asain, 1% Pacific Islander, and the remaining 1% is other. There is also a diverse range of ages throughout the city. The median average income is around $57,000. Approximately 16% of the population lives in poverty, but the city is trending in the right direction for revitalization and economic improvement.
MART has local bus routes that run through Fitchburg, connected with the Commuter Rail. There are twelve local routes that the MART buses follow that run through Fitchburg, Leominster, and Gardner. Single trip fares on a MART bus costs $1.25 for individuals aged 19-59. The price for students and the elderly for a single trip is $0.60. The monthly cost for local bus passes for people aged 19-59 is $30.00 and $20.00 for the elderly or students with proper ID.
Additionally, there is a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter train that runs into Boston, with two stops in Fitchburg. The Wachusett stop, located at 55 Authority Dr, Fitchburg, MA 01420, and the Fitchburg stop, at 150 Main St, Fitchburg, MA 01420. This train allows for the opportunity for citizens of Fitchburg to not only work outside of, but travel outside of the city. A one-way ticket into Boston or any of the stops along the way is $12.25. Passengers are also able to purchase a monthly pass for $388.
With a long history of being an industrious and busy manufacturing city, Fitchburg still is filled with lots of businesses. The city supports the many small businesses set up in the area, such as Mill No.3, Pammy’s Place, and dozens of others. Fitchburg also participates in “Small Business Saturday,” held on November 24th, which is a day where the people of North Central Massachusetts are especially encouraged to buy from and support small and/or local businesses. Many of the city’s leaders are publicly supportive of these establishments.
