Chapter 1
The summer sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the rugged terrain of the Cartwright family’s property in Colorado. The dry, earthy scent of the mountains mingled with the faint smell of pine as Charlie Cartwright wiped the sweat from his brow and adjusted the strap of his heavy backpack.
Beside him, his younger sister, Mariah, surveyed the landscape with a keen eye, her curiosity as boundless as the mountains themselves. Charlie, tall and lean with sandy blonde hair that always seemed to be a little tousled, led the way through the rocky terrain. His blue eyes gleamed with excitement—he had discovered a new dig site on the edge of their property, and he was eager to explore it.
Their family had been in the mining business for generations, and the Cartwright siblings had inherited a love for exploring the unknown.
“Are you sure this is it?” Mariah asked, her voice tinged with excitement. At fourteen, she was just as adventurous as her older brother, if not more so.
Her dark brown hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail, and her green eyes sparkled with anticipation. She had a knack for crafting tools and had brought along a few of her own inventions, just in case.
“Positive,” Charlie replied, glancing over his shoulder with a grin. “Dad mentioned an old survey map that showed a cave system out this way, but he never got around to exploring it. If we’re lucky, we might find something interesting.”
The two siblings had spent countless hours exploring old mines and abandoned dig sites, their fascination with the hidden depths of the Earth growing with each discovery. But this site was different—something about it felt special, almost as if it were waiting for them.
As they continued their trek, the terrain grew steeper, the ground beneath their boots shifting from loose gravel to solid rock. Mariah’s heart raced as they rounded a bend and the entrance to a deep cave came into view.
The mouth of the cave was wide and dark, the shadows within seeming to pulse with a life of their own.
“Whoa,” Mariah breathed, staring into the inky blackness. “It’s huge.”
Charlie nodded, his excitement palpable. “And it’s just begging to be explored.”
They approached the cave’s entrance cautiously, their footsteps echoing off the stone walls. Charlie flicked on his flashlight, the beam cutting through the darkness and revealing rough, jagged walls that seemed to go on forever.
“Let’s see what we’ve got,” Charlie said, his voice a mix of excitement and determination. He stepped into the cave, Mariah close behind.
The air inside the cave was cool and damp, a stark contrast to the dry heat outside. The siblings moved carefully, their flashlights sweeping over the walls and floor, searching for any signs of old mining activity. But what they found was something far more intriguing.
About fifty yards into the cave, Charlie’s flashlight caught a glint of metal. He crouched down, brushing away the dirt and debris to reveal a large, rusted metal door embedded in the rock. The door was old, its surface pitted with age, but the hinges were surprisingly intact.
“Look at this,” Charlie murmured, running his hand over the rough surface. “This isn’t part of any mine I’ve ever seen.”
Mariah knelt beside him, examining the door with her sharp, inquisitive eyes. “It looks like an old government installation. Maybe a bomb shelter or something.”
Charlie’s heart skipped a beat. “Or something.”

Without another word, he began searching for a way to open the door. Mariah joined him, her fingers tracing the edges of the metal, searching for a latch or a handle. After a few minutes of fruitless searching, Charlie’s hand brushed against a hidden panel in the rock. He pressed it, and with a loud groan, the door slowly creaked open.
The siblings exchanged a glance, their hearts pounding in unison. Beyond the door was a narrow tunnel, dimly lit by a series of flickering lights that stretched into the distance.
“This is amazing,” Mariah whispered, her voice filled with awe. “We have to see where it leads.”
Charlie nodded, his excitement barely contained. “Let’s go.”
They stepped through the door, the air inside the tunnel cool and still, as if it had been undisturbed for decades. The walls were lined with old, rusted pipes and wires, and the floor was covered in a thin layer of dust. As they walked deeper into the tunnel, the lights grew brighter, illuminating the path ahead. The tunnel curved slightly, and when they rounded the corner, they both stopped in their tracks, their mouths falling open in shock.
Before them was a large underground chamber, and in the center of the chamber was a sleek, futuristic train. The train’s surface gleamed in the dim light, its design unlike anything the siblings had ever seen. It looked out of place, as if it belonged to a different time—or perhaps a different world.
“This is unreal,” Charlie whispered, taking a step closer to the train. “What is this place?”
Mariah shook her head, her eyes wide with wonder. “I have no idea. But we have to find out.”
The siblings approached the train, their hearts racing with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. The train’s doors slid open with a soft hiss, revealing a clean, brightly lit interior. It was as if the train had been waiting for them, perfectly preserved in the depths of the Earth.
Charlie turned to Mariah, his eyes shining with excitement.
“Are you ready for this?”
Mariah grinned, her fear momentarily forgotten. “I was born ready. Let’s try it out”
With that, they stepped onto the train, the doors sliding shut behind them. The train hummed to life, and with a gentle lurch, it began to move, whisking them away into the unknown.
As the train sped through the darkness, the siblings couldn’t help but wonder where it was taking them—and what secrets awaited them in this hidden underground installation.
