Chapter 1
Mia Delgado was always on the move. Whether it was solving puzzles, getting her hands dirty with a DIY project, or helping her younger brother, Leo, with his endless questions, she never seemed to have a moment's rest. Today was no different.
Mia sat at the kitchen table, her brow furrowed in concentration. Spread out before her were the remnants of Leo’s latest school project: a detailed diorama of the solar system. Her mom, bustling around the kitchen, occasionally glanced over with a smile.
“Need any help, sweetheart?” her mom asked.
“I’ve got it, thanks,” Mia replied, carefully positioning Jupiter in its rightful place. Leo was beside her, eagerly bouncing on his toes.
“Mia, can you make Saturn’s rings look more realistic?” Leo asked, his eyes wide with excitement.
Mia grinned. “Sure thing, Leo. Let’s add some glitter for the rings. It’ll make them pop.”
As she worked, Mia’s thoughts drifted to her friends, Ethan and Amara. They were planning to meet up after school to explore the woods on the edge of town. There was a new rumor circulating about the ghost town that supposedly appeared and disappeared at random. Mia couldn’t wait to check it out.
“Done!” she declared, handing the completed diorama to Leo. “What do you think?”
Leo’s face lit up. “It’s perfect! Thanks, Mia!”
She ruffled his hair. “No problem, kiddo. Now, go show Mom.”
Mia watched as Leo proudly presented the diorama to their mom, then glanced at the clock. It was almost time to head to school. She grabbed her backpack and gave her mom a quick hug.
“See you later, Mom! I’ve got to meet Ethan and Amara after school,” she called as she headed out the door.
“Be safe, Mia!” her mom replied.
School dragged on as usual, with Mia’s mind wandering to the adventure that awaited. By the time the final bell rang, she was practically out of her seat. She met up with Ethan and Amara at their usual spot by the bike racks.
Ethan, a tall boy with a serious demeanor, adjusted his glasses and gave Mia a nod. “Ready to go?”
“You bet,” Mia replied, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Amara, a petite girl with curly hair and an infectious smile, looked a bit more hesitant. “Are you sure about this, Mia? I mean, what if the rumors are true?”
Mia shrugged. “That’s why we’re going—to find out for ourselves. Besides, it’ll be fun.”
The trio set off on their bikes, pedaling towards the woods. As they rode, the town’s modern buildings gave way to the dense forest, the air growing cooler and more mysterious. Mia led the way, her determination unwavering.
Chapter 2
They reached the edge of the woods and parked their bikes. Mia pulled out a map she had printed from the internet, showing the supposed location of the ghost town.
“This way,” she said, pointing into the trees.
They walked in silence, the only sounds being the crunch of leaves underfoot and the occasional bird call. Mia’s heart pounded with anticipation. After about an hour of hiking, they came upon a clearing. There, in the middle of the woods, stood the ghost town.
It was exactly as the rumors described: an old-fashioned town frozen in time. Wooden buildings with peeling paint, dusty streets, and an eerie silence that hung in the air. Mia took a deep breath, feeling a strange mixture of excitement and apprehension.
“We found it,” Ethan said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Amara hugged herself, looking around nervously. “This place is creepy. Maybe we should come back during the day.”
Mia shook her head. “We’re here now. Let’s at least take a quick look around.”
They explored the ghost town, peering into old storefronts and walking down the silent streets. Mia felt an odd connection to the place, like she had been there before. She spotted a small locket lying on the ground and picked it up, feeling a strange chill run down her spine.
“Look at this,” she said, showing the locket to Ethan and Amara. “It’s so old.”
Ethan examined it closely. “There’s a picture inside. It’s a girl, about our age.”
Amara shivered. “This is too weird. Can we please go home now?”
Mia nodded. “Yeah, let’s head back. We’ll come up with a plan and meet back here tonight. Agreed?”
Ethan hesitated but finally nodded. “Okay. But we need to be careful.”
Amara sighed. “Fine. But if anything strange happens, I’m out.”
They made their way back to their bikes, the ghost town’s eerie presence lingering in their minds. As they rode home, Mia couldn’t shake the feeling that they were on the brink of uncovering something extraordinary. She was determined to see it through, no matter what.
