Chapter 1
The neon glow of carnival lights danced across the bustling fairgrounds, casting a kaleidoscope of colors onto the eager faces of visitors. At the heart of this nocturnal festival, a new attraction towered over the rest, drawing a massive crowd that buzzed with anticipation. Clowning in the Dark, the sign proclaimed in bold, twisted letters that curled like a clown’s sneer. Below it, a digital board flashed "PG-14 Experience," a warning—or a challenge—to all who dared to enter.
Chris Lawson, a wiry boy with a shock of untamed chestnut hair and a sprinkle of freckles across his nose, pulled at the collar of his faded blue hoodie, his green eyes sparkling with mischief. Standing just a shade under five feet, he nudged his slightly taller, more solidly built friend, Tommy Turner.
Tommy’s curly black hair was tucked under a baseball cap, and his brown eyes scanned the entrance nervously, his hands stuffed into the pockets of his jeans.
"Man, can you believe this line?" Chris whispered, tilting his head toward the snaking queue that wrapped around the colorful facade of the funhouse. The entrance was fashioned like a gaping clown mouth, its red-lipped smile wide and welcoming, yet somehow sinister.
Tommy frowned, adjusting his cap. "We're not even fourteen yet, Chris. What if they check IDs?"
Chris flashed a grin, his earlier reconnaissance paying off. "They only check at the booth, not in the line. We just walk past like we belong, easy."
With a conspiratorial nod, they edged toward the age verification booth, where a bored-looking attendant barely glanced at the passing crowd. Seizing the moment, Chris led the way, striding with feigned confidence. They slipped past the booth, their hearts pounding in their chests, and merged into the line amidst a group of distracted teenagers.
"See? Nothing to it," Chris murmured, a triumphant smirk pulling at his lips.
Tommy let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding, but his relief was short-lived. The line moved quickly, the thrill of impending adventure growing with each step closer to the clown’s gaping maw. Around them, excited chatter filled the air, blending with the distant screams and laughter from other rides.
The facade of the ride was a masterpiece of carnival art, with exaggerated clown features plastered across every surface. The clown’s eyes, bulbous and unblinking, were painted a deep, haunting blue, and seemed to follow them as they shuffled forward. Its hair was a tangled mess of bright red, framing the face in wild, chaotic curls.
As they neared the entrance, the overhead lights dimmed, plunging the line into a shadowy twilight that made the clown’s face all the more menacing. A chill ran down Tommy’s spine, his earlier excitement morphing into a twinge of dread.
"Just a bit further," Chris whispered, his voice tinged with excitement rather than fear.
But just as they were about to step through the clown’s mouth and into the darkened tunnel beyond, a firm hand clamped down on each of their shoulders. They turned to see a tall, imposing security guard, his face stern and unamused.
"I need to see some ID, boys," he said, his voice low and gruff.
Chris’s heart sank. "We were just—"
The guard’s gaze hardened. "This ride is PG-14 for a reason. Either show me some ID or get out."
Tommy’s cheeks burned with embarrassment as they were escorted out of the line, past the curious and amused stares of other patrons. The guard led them to the front gates of the carnival, his grip firm on their shoulders.
"Try coming back when you’re old enough," he said, not unkindly, as he ushered them out of the park.
The cool night air hit them, heavy with the scent of popcorn and cotton candy, now tainted with the sting of their expulsion. The bright lights of the carnival receded behind them, leaving them in the dim glow of the parking lot.
Chris kicked at a stray pebble, his frustration evident. "So much for that."
Tommy sighed, adjusting his cap again. "Maybe we can try again next year?"
Chris glanced back at the carnival, its lights twinkling mockingly in the distance. "Yeah, next year," he echoed, though the adventure lost tonight felt like a promise that wouldn’t be easily reclaimed.
As they walked away, the laughter and screams of the carnival haunting them, both boys knew this was only the beginning. The allure of Clowning in the Dark was too strong to ignore, and one way or another, they would find their way back inside.
Chapter 2
The next day at school, the corridors were abuzz with chatter more animated than usual. Posters plastered on the walls announcing the upcoming fall dance seemed dull compared to the excited recounting of carnival adventures. Chris and Tommy, trudging through the hallway with their backpacks slung low, couldn't help but overhear snippets of conversation about Clowning in the Dark.
"Man, it was insane! You actually feel like those clowns are chasing you!" one boy exclaimed, his eyes wide with exhilaration.
"Yeah, and the part where you go through the spinning tunnel? I thought I was gonna hurl, but it was so worth it!" a girl chimed in, laughter bubbling in her voice.
Chris felt a pang of jealousy tighten in his chest. He shot Tommy a look, who returned a shrug as if to say, "What can you do?"
Their walk to class was interrupted when they spotted Molly Davis by her locker. Molly, with her short blonde hair pulled back into a practical ponytail and glasses perched on her nose, always had an air of quiet competence about her.
Today, however, there was a trace of fatigue in her eyes. As she shut her locker, Chris approached her, a plan beginning to form in his mind.
"Hey, Molly," Chris greeted, trying to sound casual. "Heard you were working the new ride last night."
Molly turned, her expression brightening a bit at the sight of her friends. "Oh, hey, guys. Yeah, I was. It’s crazy popular. Lines all evening long."
Tommy nudged Chris, urging him to get to the point. Clearing his throat, Chris leaned against the locker next to hers. "Must be pretty repetitive, huh? Doing the same stuff over and over?"
Molly sighed, adjusting her glasses. "You have no idea. It's just pushing the same buttons and pulling the same levers in sequence. Sometimes I feel like I could do it in my sleep."
Chris’s eyes sparkled with mischief. "Really? What’s the sequence?"
Molly laughed, shaking her head. "Why? Planning to take over my job?"
"Just curious," Chris replied with a grin. After a moment’s hesitation, Molly relented, detailing the simple sequence required to start the ride. Chris listened intently, memorizing each step.
Armed with this new information, Chris pulled Tommy aside as soon as Molly had walked away to her next class. "We’re going back tonight," he declared. "We’ll start the ride ourselves, get as many goes as we want."
Tommy’s eyes widened. "Are you sure? What if we get caught again?"
"We won’t," Chris assured him, his confidence infectious. "We know what to do now, and there won’t be any lines or anyone to stop us after hours."
The plan set, the rest of the school day dragged on interminably. Once the final bell rang, Chris and Tommy rushed to Tommy’s house to gather supplies: flashlights, a couple of snacks, and, most importantly, a pair of old gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints. Under the cover of dusk, they made their way back to the carnival, hearts pounding with anticipation and nerves.
The carnival was a different beast at night, without the crowds and the cacophony of sounds that filled it by day. The boys crept along the fence line, the gaudy lights of the rides casting long, spooky shadows.
Chris, who had scouted the area earlier, led Tommy to a small gap in the fence he had discovered, obscured by thick bushes.
"Here," Chris whispered, pushing aside the foliage to reveal the gap. "We can squeeze through."
One by one, they slipped through the gap, their bodies tense and ready to bolt at the slightest sound. Once inside, they navigated through the dimly lit paths of the carnival, making their way to Clowning in the Dark. The ride loomed ominously in the darkness, its clown face more sinister without the throngs of people around it.
Tommy swallowed hard, his earlier enthusiasm dampened by the eerie silence. "This is kinda creepy, man."
Chris flashed him a grin, pulling on his gloves. "That’s the point, isn’t it? Come on, let’s get this thing started."
Reaching the control booth, Chris carefully entered the sequence Molly had described. The ride whirred to life, its lights flickering on, bathing the area in an eerie glow. The boys exchanged a look of triumph, adrenaline surging through their veins.
"Ready for the ride of your life?" Chris asked, his voice a mix of bravado and genuine excitement.
Tommy nodded, his nervousness overridden by the thrill of their success. "Let’s do it."
Together, they stepped into the ride’s car, the doors shutting with a definitive clank that echoed slightly in the stillness. As the car jolted forward into the darkness of the clown’s gaping mouth, the real adventure—and terror—began.
