When Elena Santiago's father, an archaeologist, brings her and her friends to an ancient site in South America, they uncover a structure hidden deep within an Aztec city. But this is no ordinary gateway—it allows them to travel into fantastical realms.
A malevolent figure, trapped within the realms, is hunting them. As the barriers between realms begin to collapse, Elena and her friends must decipher the secrets of the ancients, confront their darkest fears, and find a way to stop the being before it’s too late.
Chapter 1
The humid air clung to Elena Santiago’s skin as she stepped out of the jeep and surveyed the sprawling ruins before her. The ancient Aztec city of Tezcatl was nestled deep within the South American jungle, its stone temples and crumbling walls shrouded in thick vines and overgrown vegetation.
The site was a far cry from the bustling city streets she was used to, but there was an undeniable allure to it, a sense of history waiting to be uncovered.
“Isn’t this incredible?” Dr. Javier Santiago, her father, asked as he joined her, his voice filled with excitement.
He was a tall, lean man with graying hair and a passion for archaeology that had driven him to explore some of the most remote corners of the world.
Today, that passion had brought them here, to Tezcatl, where he was leading an excavation team. Elena nodded, though her gaze was drawn more to the dense jungle surrounding the site than the ruins themselves. “It’s something, all right,” she replied, trying to muster the enthusiasm her father clearly felt.
She wasn’t ungrateful—being invited to join him on an actual dig was a dream come true—but she couldn’t shake the feeling that they were intruding on something ancient, something that should have been left undisturbed.
A high-pitched giggle brought her attention back to the jeep, where her younger sister, Sofia, was struggling to free herself from the seatbelt. “I can’t wait to see the temples!” Sofia exclaimed, her wide brown eyes shining with excitement.
At eleven years old, Sofia was already following in their father’s footsteps, devouring every book on history and archaeology she could get her hands on. She was smaller than Elena, with a round face, curly black hair that refused to be tamed, and an insatiable curiosity that often got her into trouble.
“Just stay close,” Dr. Santiago warned as he reached over to help Sofia with the seatbelt. “There are still parts of the city that haven’t been fully explored, and I don’t want either of you wandering off on your own.”
“Don’t worry, Dad,” Elena said, though she couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at the corners of her mouth.
She knew Sofia well enough to understand that keeping her from wandering off would be a challenge, but she would try her best to keep an eye on her sister.
As they made their way toward the heart of the ruins, Elena marveled at the sheer scale of the ancient city. Towering stone pyramids loomed overhead, their once sharp edges worn smooth by centuries of wind and rain. Carved stone figures, their features barely discernible, stood guard over the crumbling temples, their eyes seemingly watching the newcomers with a mix of curiosity and suspicion.
“This city was once a thriving center of culture and learning,” Dr. Santiago explained as they walked, his voice carrying the reverence of someone who had devoted his life to studying such places. “The Aztecs believed that this was a place where the veil between the physical world and the spiritual world was thin, where they could communicate with their gods and ancestors.”
Sofia’s eyes widened as she took in her father’s words. “Do you think there are still spirits here, Dad? Maybe they’re watching us right now!”
Dr. Santiago chuckled. “I wouldn’t worry too much about spirits, Sofia. The real danger here is the jungle. There are snakes, insects, and hidden pitfalls. That’s why we need to be careful.”
Elena couldn’t help but feel a shiver run down her spine as they passed a particularly large stone figure, its eyes staring out from beneath a heavy brow. There was something about this place that felt different from the other ruins they had visited. It was as though the city itself was alive, waiting for something—or someone.
Chapter 2
The group reached the central plaza, where the rest of the excavation team was hard at work, carefully brushing away dirt and debris from the ancient stones. Dr. Santiago introduced his daughters to the team, who greeted them warmly, clearly accustomed to the presence of children on such expeditions.
“Why don’t you two explore the plaza while I check in with the team?” Dr. Santiago suggested, gesturing to the open space surrounded by towering pyramids. “Just don’t go too far.”
Elena nodded, though she couldn’t help but feel a pang of unease as her father walked away. The plaza was impressive, but there was a heaviness in the air, a sense of something waiting to be discovered.
“Come on, Elena!” Sofia called, already dashing toward the base of one of the pyramids. “Let’s see if we can find any cool carvings!”
Elena sighed, shaking off her apprehension as she followed her sister. The pyramid was massive, its stone steps worn smooth by time and the elements. She ran her fingers over the carvings that adorned the base, tracing the intricate patterns and symbols that told the story of the ancient city’s rise and fall.
Sofia was already halfway up the steps, her small figure a stark contrast against the massive stone structure. “Come on, Elena!” she called again, her voice echoing off the stone walls. Elena hesitated, glancing back at the excavation team before deciding to join her sister. She quickly climbed the steps, her heart pounding as she reached the top and looked out over the vast jungle that surrounded them.
From this height, the ruins seemed even more isolated, a forgotten relic of a time long past.
“Look at this!” Sofia’s voice drew her attention back to the pyramid’s summit, where her sister was kneeling beside a large stone slab set into the ground. The slab was covered in the same intricate carvings they had seen at the base, but there was something different about these—something that made the hairs on the back of Elena’s neck stand on end.
“What is it?” Elena asked, crouching beside Sofia to get a closer look.
“I don’t know,” Sofia replied, her brow furrowed in concentration as she traced the lines of the carvings with her fingers. “But it’s different from the other carvings. It looks newer, like it hasn’t been worn down as much.”
Elena nodded, her gaze following the patterns as they spiraled inward, forming a complex design that seemed to pulse with energy. “Maybe it was added later, after the city was abandoned.”
Sofia nodded, her fingers still tracing the lines. “Maybe... or maybe it’s hiding something.”
Before Elena could ask what she meant, there was a sudden rumble beneath their feet. The stone slab shuddered, and a low grinding sound filled the air as it slowly began to slide open, revealing a dark, gaping hole beneath it.
Elena and Sofia scrambled back, their hearts racing as they stared at the opening. The darkness within seemed to beckon to them, its depths impossible to see.
“We need to tell Dad,” Elena said, her voice trembling as she reached for Sofia’s hand.
But Sofia, her curiosity piqued, was already inching closer to the edge. “Wait, Elena. What if this is something important? What if we’ve found something no one else has?”
Elena hesitated, torn between her instinct to protect her sister and the undeniable pull of the unknown. The air around them seemed to grow colder, the shadows within the hole shifting as though something within was waiting to be discovered.
“We’ll just take a quick look,” Sofia suggested, her voice filled with excitement. “If it’s too dangerous, we’ll go back and tell Dad. But what if there’s something amazing down there? We could be the first ones to find it!”
Elena’s heart pounded in her chest as she stared into the darkness. Every rational part of her screamed to go back, to get their father, to leave the mysteries of this ancient city to the experts. But something deep within her—a sense of adventure, of discovery—urged her to take the leap.
“Okay,” she finally agreed, her voice barely a whisper. “But we have to be careful. If anything feels wrong, we turn back immediately.”
Sofia grinned, her excitement infectious as she squeezed Elena’s hand. “Deal!”
Taking a deep breath, Elena led the way as they carefully lowered themselves into the opening. The darkness closed in around them, the air cool and damp as they descended into the unknown.
The stone steps beneath their feet were uneven and worn, leading them deeper into the heart of the pyramid. The walls were lined with more carvings, their patterns seeming to shift and change in the dim light filtering down from above.
As they reached the bottom of the steps, the tunnel opened up into a vast chamber, its ceiling lost in the shadows. The walls were covered in more intricate carvings, depicting scenes of rituals and ceremonies, of gods and monsters.
But what caught Elena’s attention was the massive stone arch structure that stood at the center of the chamber, its surface covered in glowing symbols that pulsed with an eerie, otherworldly light.
“Wow,” Sofia whispered, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in the sight. “This is... incredible.”
Elena nodded, though her gaze was fixed on the structure. There was something about it that made her uneasy, something that felt... alive.
“We need to tell Dad about this,” she said, her voice shaking as she reached for Sofia’s hand. “This is too big for us to handle on our own.”
But before they could turn back, the structure began to hum, the symbols glowing brighter as the air around them seemed to vibrate with energy. The ground beneath their feet trembled, and the chamber filled with a low, resonating sound that echoed through the darkness.
“Elena,” Sofia whispered, her voice filled with fear as she clutched her sister’s hand. “What’s happening?”
Elena didn’t have an answer, her heart racing as she tried to pull Sofia back toward the steps. But the structure’s pull was too strong, the air around them crackling with electricity as the symbols on its surface began to spin, faster and faster, until they were a blur of light.
And then, with a blinding flash, the world around them vanished, and the sisters were pulled into the unknown.
