The initiative to develop a community area came from Willaston Residents' and Country Society who expressed a desire to find a site to develop a wood to celebrate the Millennium in 2000. The current site was identified for this purpose. However, a botanical survey revealed it to be mostly neutral grassland (unimproved for agriculture) and consequently rich in native flora such as pignut, yellow rattle and knapweed. It is named on the Tithe Map of 1848 and was probably always used as a traditional hay meadow. It was felt important to preserve this rare habitat, whilst also establishing a wood and orchard on the edges.

The original members were Hilary Morris (Chair), David Nind (Secretary), Max Kirby (Treasurer), David Morris (Newsletter Editor), Mike Griffiths, Elaine Mills and Pam Irving. The group manages the area in association with Cheshire West and Chester Council. A Lottery grant in 2004 enabled the acquisition of gates, fencing and a noticeboard.

In 2002, Willaston won its class in the Best Kept Village and an ash tree was part of the prize. This was planted by Cllr Myles Hogg at the far entrance to the Meadow.
In December 2002, Groundwork Wirral organised a poetry class about trees for some of the children at Willaston Primary School and the following week they helped plant a hedge between Jackson's Pond and the main Meadow area.
From 2002 to 2012, local schoolchildren helped plant trees in the area now known as School Wood.
In March 2004 an orchard, initially of nine apple trees was established with the support of the three local Women's Institutes. All of the trees flowered the following spring and seven trees had fruit - one tree 'Sussex Mother' had an amazing 11 lbs.
