Friends of the Durban Art Gallery

The Friends of the Durban Art Gallery was convened on Friday, March 5, 1965 in the Durban City Hall.

This Association is 53 this year. Their main objective has been to promote and encourage public interest in, and support for, the Durban Art Gallery. One of the ways in which this has been achieved in the past has been in the purchase of art works for the collection. In 1998 a new wing of the Friends was formed and this was the Red Eye Art initiative. This initiative was designed to attract a young audience to the gallery and also raised funds to purchase several works for the collection, mostly by young and upcoming artists.

The latter years have seen an emphasis on South African works as there is now greater consciousness of the value of our own heritage and the importance to preserve this. South African art is now internationally recognized and collected and we are fortunate to have such an excellent collection in the eThekwini Municipality.

The latest initiative is to provide an online resource (website) for exhibitions of community and international interest.
