The Friends of Mondavi Center Board meets on the second Tuesday of each month.
Co-President Juney Lee
I became a Friend of the Mondavi Center five years ago and have served on the Board for the past three years—first as Co–Vice President and currently as Co–President. I have helped shape Friends Forward goals and strategies, prepared the Friends Annual Report, and serve as a Head Usher for Mondavi Center’s school matinees. I joined Friends in 2021 out of a deep commitment to the performing arts, especially for young people. As a lifelong UC Davis Alumni, I’ve especially valued watching my daughter, nephew, and granddaughter perform at the Mondavi Center. Friends plays a vital role in supporting arts education and opportunities for students. I would be honored to continue serving if elected.
Co-President Candace Gilmore Lawyer
joined the Friends Of Mondavi three years ago, starting as an usher before joining the board as the vice president two years ago. In this role, I support the co-presidents as needed and actively contribute to the visibility of Friends. I designed the Friends banner that is now featured at all of our events, supervised Mondavi Center student assistant-photographers at school matinees, served as a head usher, and chaired the 2025-26 nominations board. I am also the board liaison to help reintroduce Mondavi Center tours and hosted Friends' end of the year fundraiser event. I am deeply committed to the Friends Of Mondavi mission and look forward to continuing my service on the board in the coming year.
Vice-President Judy Fleenor
I have been a part of the Davis/ Woodland community since 1992. For many years I was a teacher in the Davis Joint Unified School District working at both Pioneer Elementary and Montgomery. When I retired, I joined Friends of Mondavi Center. I was, and still am, an usher for the matinees and was also part of the School Outreach committee. I served on the Board as head of Tours from 2014 – 2017. I have been invited to return to the Board as Vice President. I know how important it is to bring the performing arts into our schools and reach as many students as possible, and am happy to help continue supporting the goals of The Friends.
Treasurer Liz Stevens
I moved to Davis 13 years ago and have been attending Mondavi events ever since. I became a member of Friends about 2 years ago, regularly ushering at the student matinees and serving on the Events Committee. Before moving to Yolo County, I worked as a social worker with older adults. I later assisted individuals with Medicare-related issues through my work with a nonprofit agency. Throughout my career and retirement, I have remained a dedicated supporter of social justice initiatives and issues. I thank my “walking buddies” for introducing me to the Friends of the Mondavi Center. I look forward to serving on the board.
Secretary Carole Gray
After retiring, I moved to Davis to be with my daughter and grandsons. This coincided with the birth of my third grandson, so I spent several years being with him while my daughter attended classes at UC Davis. When my grandson started attending Davis schools, I became a member of the University Farm Circle, I volunteered at his school, at senior living centers and the Mondavi Center. I’m now lucky to be able to combine my Mondavi Center matinee usher position with being with school students and sharing the love of arts education. I lived for many years in Massachusetts and volunteered with the Wang Center for the Performing Arts and I’m pleased to be working at the Mondavi Center which also promotes and presents the performances of great artists. I look forward to this opportunity to continue supporting arts education and working with talented and artistic people.
Communications Committee Chair Sharon Ewers
My husband and I moved to Davis almost five years ago and attended our first Mondavi Center event shortly after we arrived. We heard that ushers were needed for the school matinee program and enthusiastically volunteered. One thing led to another and I found myself serving on the Friends of Mondavi Center Board as the secretary. My familiarity with Google Apps led to my nomination for this new Board postion. I love doing my part to provide opportunities for young people of all ages to attend world-class live performances.
Membership Committee Chair Artie Lawyer
This season, Artie has been the chair of the Membership Committee. For the three years before that, Artie chaired the Ushering Committee. He helps out as a Head Usher and coordinates the assignments for UCD student support activities. He loves making lists and tracking details. In his previous life he was a scientific regulatory consultant and was the long time CEO of Technology Sciences Group Inc.
School Outreach and Support Committee Roz Tyson
The Mondavi Center has been a big part of my life ever since I moved to Davis to be near my daughter and her family in 2016. Initially I attended concerts and then later became a member of the Friends of Mondavi; I started ushering for school matinees just before the pandemic hit and resumed as soon as the pandmic was over. I would be honored to be on the Board. I am a lawyer; I retired after a long career with the Securities and Exchange Commission's Los Angeles Office. Before the move to Davis I did volunteer work for the Los Angeles League of Women Voters; now, besides belonging to the Friends, I am a grandmother, gardener and golfer.
School Matinee Ushering Chair Russ Ewers
After living 42 years in Phoenix, moving to Davis nearly five years ago meant that my wife and I had to develop new friendships and associations. The easiest and most natural was for us to find ways to support children, education and the arts. The Mondavi Center and the Friends of Mondavi checked all of those boxes. We began as ushers for the School Matinees and then each found logical volunteer opportunities within the Friends that met our skill sets and interests. I serve on the School Outreach Committee, which position has allowed me to work with a select group of local school Districts distributing tickets for the School Matinee programming. This past performance season I have been Chair of the Ushering Committee, co-ordinating volunteers for the School Matinees.
Events Committee Co-Chair Karen Street
After becoming a Friend in 2010, I volunteered in Mondavi Center’s gift shop, ushered at student matinees, and was a member of the School Outreach Committee. I have chaired the School Outreach Committee and have co-chaired the Membership Committee as well as the Events Committee with Nancy White.
Events Committee Co-Chair Kay Resler
I have lived in Davis since 1969 when I began working in Agricultural Engineering at UCD and retired from the same department in 2007. I was involved with Staff Assembly and organized numerous events for years as chair and co-chair and member; Thank Goodness for Staff week was always a highlight. I’ve been a member and past president of the Davis Rotary Club since 2002, served on the Board for the Yolo Crisis Nursery and I'm a Friend of the Nursery. I became involved when the Mondavi Center was being built and was an usher for years. I was asked to get involved as a Friend which I gladly did. Currently I'm an usher for the School Matinees and have been on the Events Committee for several years. I volunteered in the gift shop and finally became one of the buyers for the merchandise which I sorely miss. I've gotten to know so many wonderful friends and at most social events I’m the beverage gal!
