Girl Scout Silver Award Project
My mission is to help Wilton families, who utilize the Wilton Food Pantry, have access to more fresh fruits and vegetables.
The Teen Garden at Trackside Teen Center gives the fresh fruits, vegetables, and flowers it grows to the Wilton Food Pantry. Members of the Wilton Garden Club and teens from Middlebrook Middle School work in the garden from Spring to Fall.
I have volunteered in the Teen Garden helping plant and harvest fresh food for a couple of years. Nutrition scarcity is an important topic to me and since the garden donates to our town food pantry, I knew I wanted to help everyone involved somehow. So, I met with the coordinator of the teen garden, Mrs. Musilli, to see what needs the garden might have and how my work could benefit the food pantry. She taught me that if we could extend the growing season, the garden could produce more food longer in the year. And the best way to extend the growing season in a garden in New England is to build a cold frame! And this became the project!
