A collaborative effort to promote and protect freedom in reading choices and access for all Georgians
Each year, we observe Banned Books Week to enhance awareness of book challenges and bans in the United States. In Georgia, since 2021 we have celebrated our Freedom to Read throughout October by encouraging our students to share their voices in essay and video contests for elementary, middle, and high school students. Projects are judged for assignment to exemplary, merit, and participant recognitions (rather than place rankings); results are shared with schools and on our website here. Forms and project prompts were posted on national Let Freedom Read Day (9/28/24) for the 2024 contests.
Intellectual Freedom threats and responses in Georgia, the Southeast, and across the U.S. News and opinion pieces plus avenues for action are included. Contact us if you learn of new activity!
