Lesson sub-theme: Animals and Nature
English Level: B1/B1+
Warm-up (5 min)
The teacher will show Ss. some animal images created with Craiyon and ask them if they can recognize the animals on the pictures and some of their characteristics.
Pre-reading (3 min)
After going through the images brought by the teacher, each student will select their favourite animal and share it with their peers. They may add why they like that animal the most. Then Ss will open their books at the unit dealing with Nature
The descriptions introduced in the book look like the following example
Habitat: Mountains
Description: The goat lives in mountains. It's got short brown or white fur, a short tail and two horns
While Reading (10 min)
The teacher and students will read together each animal description present on both pages and work together to complete some activities using the information present on the book as well as information they may know beforehand. These activities include the identification of different habitats, parts of the body, fur patterns and the distinction between mammals, reptiles and birds.
Post listening (3 min)
As they are now aware of more lexis to describe animals, Ss will be encouraged to try to explain their favourite animal using some of the new words they have read. While some Ss talk, the teacher will write down the newly introduced words on the board.
Language Analysis (4 min)
With the new words already on the board, the teacher will ask the students to classify them in a similar way as found in the book (Habitat, characteristics, parts of the body). After the different groups of words have been selected, Ss will add some more words to each category. Each student will be asked to copy that list for an easy to retrieve record keeping of the new lexis.
Language Practice (15 min)
Now the students will be asked to create a similar description of a fake animal following the ones read before. They will work on their own for the text describing the animal and the teacher will show them and share on their classroom page a tutorial on how to use Craiyon. Then, students will be asked to upload their descriptions with an image of their new animal to an assignment on Classroom.
