Mrs. Jennifer (Navy blazer) and Me
I observed St. Francis Xavier-Grade 4. Actually I observed all the teachers who taught in that class because each subject has its own teacher. And I watched them teach and interact with pupils.
I decided to focus my observations on Mrs. Jennifer Padua because she is the homeroom teacher at St. Francis Xavier-Class 4. Moreover, she also teaches two subjects, namely English and Religion, so she spends more time in that class. Based on my observations, Mrs. Padua implements Student Centered Learning (SCL).
She is close enough to her students that she can understand what her pupils needs. My favorite part of her teaching method is that she applies the Drilling Method before starting the class so as to improve students' speaking skills. She did it in groups, after which all the students repeated it together.
She applies a personal approach to her pupils. For example, if she teaches a topic, she first provides an overview of pupils daily activities or events related to that topic.
She arranges pupils seats based on their needs and personalization, based on their dominant side (left or right), height, level of focus or concentration, etc. The class is dominated by discussion. Through this method, students participate actively in class and dare to express their opinions.
Learning Materials
They have a variety of learning materials. For contextual material (pictures or information) the teacher puts it on the board. Pupils will watch it on smart televisions in front of the class. The classroom has some equipment such as natural science and mathematics teaching tools. One of them is the human body model used on the topic of human body systems. Moreover there are white board, chalk board (usually use) to put up an announcement, board marker in various colors, ruler, and few stuff who use for practicum. The learning materials used tend to be colorful in the hope of attracting pupils attention to learning.
A page on pupils handbook
The main learning source for the pupils is handbook for each subjects which all pupils have it. If there are another material that pupils must bring, the teacher announces it in the previous lesson. The teacher also provides digital material (visual/audiovisual) such as videos, power point presentations, or recordings about the topics. Teachers usually link the topics with pupils daily life.
Most teachers apply contextual material, for example teachers bring models of the human body and instruments for music practice. Furthermore, teachers also look for material from the internet whose sources must be credible, often they add at least 2 sources apart from the student handbook.
Pupils Practicum
Teachers apply three types of assessment. This assessment includes affective assessment where the teacher analyzes and observes student behavior during learning, cognitive assessment which is measured from assessment sheets or worksheets or student practicums, and psychomotor assessment which is measured from student participation during learning.
Pupils answer the teacher's questions via the note board
