From Exiles to Cancel Culture; A Comparative Analysis of 21st Century Cancel Culture and 17th Century Exiles
With an aim to understand the internet’s role in current cancel culture, this project compares the similarities and differences between exiles of early centuries and recent examples of the phenomenon in order to determine the consequences on society for cancel culture.

Research Question: With an aim to understand the similarities of cancel culture and exaltation throughout history, this study analyzes examples from the 5th century to the present in order to find the effects of “cancellation” psychologically.
Identification of Gaps in scholarly conversation
Analysis: The analysis process will follow a comparative analysis format, with “canceling” examples throughout history starting with the 5th century to now.
Implications: Find the similarities in current culture to exaltation in ancient greece. Through these similarities psychological effects on society cancel culture caused.

The issue I will be examining during this research process is how canceled culture affects society in the United States during the 21st century. I will be looking at examples of “canceling” dating back to the 5th century. This topic is important because freedom of speech is a core value the country was founded on, and this research will help the reader and myself understand if society is shifting away from that idea.
