Mr. Graham Sanford Williams built this little "Grave Shelter" house immediately following the death of his wife, to fulfill a promise he made to her that he would never let her grave get wet. He would spent many hours in the house, sitting with her and reading. He placed some of her favorite furniture in the house, including a small rocking chair. The walls were filled with family photographs and there are bookshelves filled with some of his favorite books.
After his death, there was some items that were taken from the home by possible vandals, so the City decided to close up the door and windows of the little house.
Mr. Williams owned a coal business and Mrs. Williams was very active in the church. The couple did not have any children.
Graham Sanford Williams was the son of James Graham Williams and Mary Lavinia McCarley. He married Annie Watson, daughter of John Wesley Watson, Jr and Matilda Louella Coker, in Colbert County on June 29, 1893.
