Located on Highway 81, in Newburg, Alabama, is a very small historic cemetery containing the grave of the founder of the city of Russellville, Alabama.
Major William Russell, served in the War of 1812, under the command of General Andrew Jackson. Major Russell and some of his officers and men who fought with him at the battle of Horseshoe Bend, came to this area to settle in 1818.
They called their new town Russell Valley. The town was settled about three miles southeast of what is now Russellville.
Because of sickness, the town was eventually moved to its present area.
Major Russell acquired a large tract of land in Denton Hollow, just south of Newburg and 10 miles east of Russellville, and remained there until his death on March 16, 1825. He was 63 years old. He is buried two and half miles south of his home site in Denton Hollow.
This cemetery was added to the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register on Oct 24, 2011.
