Katsuya the Ninja is a 2-D stealth platformer game developed by Sebastian Mena for my senior capstone project. The story follows Katsuya's journey into the WARMY base, where he must sneak past the worm guards in order to rescue his kidnapped friend, Gaspacho. Click here* to play our game!

All the music found within the game was created and mixed using Cubase. I mainly used electronic MIDI instruments, although I also wanted to integrate sounds of instruments from the Eastern part of the world (ex. shakuhachi, koto, sitar, etc.). The goal of each soundtrack is to set the scene as Katsuya journeys through the different areas of the WARMY base. I wanted to tie the level tracks together so there are a few recurring motifs that appear in certain sections of the songs. The level tracks also share certain MIDI instruments (ex. the whistling and pan flute representing the cats), which help to further the sense of cohesiveness within the soundtrack.
The sound effects were created using a mixture of MIDI sounds, recorded audio, and audio samples. Here are a few examples of the many sound effects used within the game.
Created by sliding two pieces of paper together
Recorded and reversed an audio sample of a "pop"
The sound of a stylus being reinserted into a Nintendo DS
Sebastian's vocals (heavily processed)
