Here are a few compositions that I've created within the last 4 years. I wanted to showcase a diverse range of pieces so each one has a different instrumentation and unique context behind it!
This composition is a programmatic concert piece based on three paintings - Paris Street; Rainy Day by Gustave Caillebotte, Café Terrace at Night by Vincent van Gogh, and another one of Gogh's famous works, Starry Night. The piece takes the listener on a journey, beginning with a walk down a rainy street, making a stop by a café to listen to a jazz band, and ending with stargazing on a peaceful night. I wrote this piece with the intention of having it be performed by a live ensemble although this specific recording is only the original MIDI rendering from my notation software. Along with the MIDI instruments, I also added some ambient sounds (ex. rain, footsteps, restaurant chatter, a quiet city street) to add some more depth to the piece's atmosphere.
[Enter Title Screen] is one of the first pieces I created using Ableton. My goal for this project was to try to write a song that would play during the opening montage of a video game title screen. I was inspired by the sound of retro video game music and I wanted to emulate that through my choice of MIDI instruments and use of melodic motifs. This is an upbeat song with lots of bouncing energy, meant to excite the player for the game they're about to play.
Tales From Midval is a three-movement orchestral piece I wrote for a composition assignment. Each movement highlights certain instrument groups and focuses on a different character or setting from a fantasy land. The Village is a very energetic piece that aims to express the everyday bustle of the commoners and their village life. The second movement centers around the Princess, making use of the softer woodwinds and strings to represent her graceful nature. The Dragon provides a stark contrast to the previous movement with the heavy brass and dissonant harmonies painting a picture of a looming beast.
For this piece, I wanted to explore the genre of musical theatre, combining my background as a singer-songwriter with my composer side. The story of my musical focuses on an aspiring screenwriter whose work gets stolen. The resulting movie is a big success but he doesn't receive any credit for it. This song begins with him feeling disheartened - he sits in his apartment wallowing in sadness but eventually, he resolves to write an even better script so that one day, the world will know his name. However, he accidentally ends up falling in love with the heroine of his own story, even though she isn't real and doesn't know he exists. The musical itself is humorous and satirical, while the lyrics are laced with irony. I had a lot of fun writing the interactions between the lyrics and the music, especially when the two characters finally sing together at the end.
This piece was created for a composition project during my 3rd year at Wilfrid Laurier University. The assignment was open-ended, only stating that our song had to be 3-5 minutes long, so I decided that I wanted to try experimenting with improvisation. I chose 13 different instruments (ex. cello, violin, harp, oboe, xylophone) and limited myself to doing one take per track on my MIDI keyboard. Intentional listening played a big role in the process since each instrument only had one chance to work with the others in creating a unified whole.
