Baptism is the process by which the faithful become members of Christ's body, the Church. Christ is the head of the Church, and the church is his body.

Because Baptism is the process by which a person becomes a member of the Church, it is asked that parents of the child to be Baptised, or the person themselves, if they are presenting themselves for Baptism, should attend Church for a while before requesting Baptism, and should do so at least up to the time of baptism. Parents, or the person requesting for Baptism will be offered the opportunity of instruction on the Sacrament of Baptism, or at least be expected to attend a rehersal before the service, so that everyone knows what to expect. Parents and Godparents will be offered the opportunity for a rehersal.

Children over the age of 7 years of age need to have a course of instruction lasting around 20 weeks. The priest will advise you of this when you ask to see him.

If you or your child have been baptised in another Church, then it's not normally necessary to baptise them again in the Catholic Church, however, there are some instances where Baptism may be required, conditionally.

At some point you may be asked to produce your child's Baptism, Confirmation or Reception Certificate, either on application for your child to attend school, or for him/her to attend a Catholic Secondary School.
