This is the first question the priest asks parents at the baptism. It's not that the priest has suddenly gone senile, he has your child's name in front of him, but this is where you now name your child. You have given a lot of thought to your child's name, lets face it, they've got it for life, and they may alter it slightly as they get older and develop their own identity. It all goes to show how important our names are to us, and that was true in Jesus time too. Many parents give their children 'modern' names, and many of them are lovely. It is the tradition of the church that children are named after Saints, those who we look to as giving us a good example of how to live the Christian life. If you have given your child a modern name, then we ask you to consider giving your child a second 'middle' name, a Christian name, or perhaps make the 'modern' name the second name, to keep with the tradition of giving your child a Christian name, after all, you are asking your child to become a Christian, by having them baptised, so why not give them a Christian name.
