Bit Depth

Image Bit Depth is the description of how many colors can be found in an image. A high bit depth means that the image will use a wide range of colors, giving it a higher image quality. Some common bit depths are 8-bit, 16-bit, and 24-bit.

Bitmap vs. Vector

Bitmap images use a combination of pixels to represent an image, meaning the image quality decreases when zooming in.

Vector images use a mathematical formula to create the image, meaning that the image quality stays the same no matter what.

File Formats

An editable original image file could be a proprietary file from an image editing software like .acorn (from the ACORN software).

Utilizing Image Files

To transfer an online image to your computer, you can save the image by right clicking. DO NOT do a "mommy save", save the file to a folder that you will remember!

When using a music notation program like Sibelius, you can export the file as a .pdf for easy use with other programs. You can then utilize an image editing program like Acorn to edit the .pdf to create materials that can be used in class.
