Jerimoth Hill, in Foster, Rhode Island is the highest point in the State at 812 feet (247 meters) above sea level. The hill is located on the south side of route 101 somewhat close to the Connecticut border with coordinates, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at:
41° 50' 58'' N; 71° 46' 43'' W
or
41.8495431, -71.7786810 (Decimal Degrees).
The Highpointers Club at one time considered Jerimoth Hill to be the most inaccessible highpoint in all of the 50 states due to the fact that the only access was across private property. While previous owners were reluctant to allow hikers to cross their property to reach the "summit" in some cases, people who tried to reach the highpoint reported they were shot at, access is now easy. Brown University took ownership in 2012 and since October 2014, both the highpoint and the access road to it, are owned by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. Access is generally available on a daily basis from dawn to dusk, so the next time you are in Foster, climb Jerimoth Hill, and become a "Highpointer."
To celebrate Foster being the host of one of only 50 State highpoints in the nation, the Foster Preservation Society has produced and is selling T-shirts which can be obtained from our office any Wednesday from 9:00 until noon.
Send us a picture of yourself or a family member wearing our Jerimoth Hill T-shirt on top of a hill, mountain, or in some other noteworthy place, and we'll put your picture up on our website!!! Pictures should be sent to: fps181@gmail.com.
On a beautiful autumn day in October 2024, Ben (in T-shirt) and Baxter visited Jerimoth Hill and left a little something in the geocache box for the next visitor.
