Historical Cemetery Program
Beginning in 2011 (and mostly completed by 2015), the Society conducted a survey of all of Foster's 158 historic cemeteries. This survey allows you to see details, GPS coordinates, and photos of each historic cemetery located in Foster, Rhode Island. The survey is an ongoing project which will be updated regularly. See our Historic Cemeteries page for more detail.
Winsor Blacksmith Shop demonstrations
Free demonstrations of the blacksmith's trade are presented during school tours, occasionally throughout the year, and during the three-day long Old Home Days celebration on the last weekend of July each year.
Plaque Program
The Foster Preservation Society has promoted the identification of homes and buildings, some of which are listed in the State and/or National Register of Historic Places, and others which may not be on the National Register but have local importance. These buildings are awarded plaques which bear the name of the original owner and date the house was built.
See our Plaque Program page for more detail.
Our members worked on and completed the research required to have four historic Foster districts listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the four districts are:
Foster Center
Hopkins Mills
Moosup Valley
Clayville
There still remain a number of individual properties throughout Foster that have been deemed eligible for nomination to the National Register, pending additional research.
Rhode Island's State Register includes nearly 20,000 properties, including those listed in the National Register of Historic Places as well as additional sites determined to be significant to Rhode Island's heritage.
Historic Tours
The Society offers educational tours to students and adult tours on an occasional basis.
In the past, Society members provided a yearly guided tour of Foster to students from the Captain Isaac Paine School (see photo).
In 2006, 2008, and 2010 the Society organized "Barn Tours" which gave attendees an inside look at many of the historic barns and associated farm structures in the Town of Foster.
In 2012, the Society ran an Historic Cemetery Tour.
Please feel free to contact us at the phone number or email shown at the bottom of this page for information about arranging a tour for your club or group.
