Harris wants you to know that The Monroe County Reporter was launched by newspaperman Don Daniel in 1972 as Monroe County's first total newspaper. It soon merged with Forsyth's long-time weekly, The Monroe Advertiser, the newspaper where famed writer Joel Chandler Harris, creator of the immortal Uncle Remus, came of age. Harris worked at the Advertiser, starting at age 20, from 1867 to 1870. In Forsyth, Harris learned his trade and rose from printer's devil to journalist, attracting a regional audience with his “Affairs of Georgia” column in the Advertiser. Harris later became famous for his Uncle Remus stories. Will Davis bought the newspaper. Under Davis’ leadership, the Reporter has won numerous awards each year for journalistic excellence and is recognized as one of the few newspapers in Georgia with a growing circulation in the digital age
