Bess' History Lesson
Fox friend Bess wants you to know that Tift College, the second oldest women’s liberal arts college and formerly known as Forsyth Female Collegiate Institute, opened in Forsyth in 1849. Tift College merged with Mercer University in 1987, and the campus now houses the headquarters for the Georgia Department of Corrections. Tales of the foxes burrowing underneath the college buildings are not only legendary, but are verified by Department of Corrections officials, who uncovered the friendly wildlife’s tunnels underneath the campus.
