I chose this environmental issue because everyone plays their role in it! Everybody is swept into the cycle of wasting food by marketing and over consumption. But the best part of that is that everyone can do their part to fix it. During the research process I really learned the overwhelming amount of impact that food waste alone has on the planet and the kind of chain reaction that decomposition and greenhouse emissions have on organisms. During the action steps I learned how much one person can have a huge impact on the future of the plant through education. Personally I think that as long as environmental education continues, more and more people will start participating in sustainable food practices. If half the planet cuts down on their food waste we can cut down greenhouse gas emissions by about 8% wich could save the world. I feel as though I discovered that I love environmental education and activism way more than I initially imagined and I did not mind spending personal time go above and beyond with this project. My environmental views changed exponentially with my involvement in FWCG.
The most difficult part of the assignment were the action steps because they required a significant amount of planning and communication that seemed almost impossible. we started off with a grad plan of organizing a large assembly but it soon became narrowed down. My favorite, and also the easiest part was the teaching! Once I got into the classroom, everything came together and the students were wonderful to work with. The strengths of our action steps were presentation and the class we chose to work with. the presentation covered all basic material and gave students an introduction into earth science. the class we choose was extremely comfortable and engaged. The weakness of our action steps was communication of our group. We had a great deal of problems getting transportation to the school.
I believe that our impact on the environment was greater than I thought it would be. After surveying a group of 31 students only 9% said they compost currently. After the presentation 77% said they were going to compost after our presentation. 100% said that they felt we told them something they did not previously know before. Post quiz results were double the pre quiz results. Though these quizzes do not show the exact kind of impact we had, I believe that even if one of that 77% begins to compost then we will have improved the environment.
