Ironic Dichotomy

BASF, USEPA, EGLE, Municipalities, and Legislative Officials claim to be "Working Together" to solve BASFs Toxic and Hazardous Venting Groundwater to the Great Lakes in Wyandotte, MI  (3000 gallons per hour).
See for yourself how this has been going.

Below, Congresswoman Dingell calls for Swift Action - July 08, 2022

Below - BASFs 30 Percent Design Timeline Submitted to USEPA on Sept 5, 2022- Starting Construction October 7, 2024.  Two years after Dingells call for Swift Action.

Below USEPA Construction Timeline Slide from Aug 23, 2023 gives BASF until at least Feb 2027 to maybe begin construction. This is  nearly 5 years after Dingells 2022 call for SWIFT Action, and a bonus 2.5 yrs on top of when BASF said they would start Construction

This is incredulous when you realize EGLE has a Court Order from 1985 (that they ignore to enforce) that contains the exact same required ground water "inward gradient" from BASF right now, that BASF proposes to meet sometime beyond 2027 when they may begin construction.

According to USEPA's slide of Aug 8 2023,  BASF's release of Toxic and Hazardous groundwater contamination
(at 3000 gallons per hour) is being allowed continue into infinity and beyond

How is this acceptable to our Elected Representatives, allowing such contamination to the Public Resources of the communities they are supposedly protecting?

Analysis:

Dingells "SWIFT" call for action  in July 8, 2022 means 5+ more years of Toxic and Hazardous Waste releases above Water Quality Criteria to YOUR Great Lakes based on USEPA's timeline slide presented to the public on Aug 8, 2023.

While Dingell called for SWIFT Action on July 8, 2022, and BASF sent USEPA a Construction Start Date of Oct 07, 2024,
USEPA Responded to the Public on August 23, 2023 giving BASF till Feb 2027 to maybe START hydraulic remedial construction at North Works.

While BASFs own 30 Percent Design submittal of Sept 05, 2022 had a Construction Start Date of Oct 7, 2024 and the Completion and Full Operation / Demobilization of the Hydraulic Barrier by  Feb 26. 2027,  USEPA extended BASFs construction start date, gratis, til Feb of 2027 or beyond, when ever BASF feels like it.

USEPAs latest Timeline for Construction BEGINNING,
is now AFTER the date when BASF themselves
submitted they would be Completely Finished!
How does this Happen?

Nevermind that BASF is in Exceedance and Violation of Michigan Water Quality Criteria and Court Order NOW
and allowed to continue for the next 3+ Years.

Why is EGLE completely silent when it has an enforceable Court Order in hand since 1985  for BASF North Works to maintain
an inward gradient with an existing Treatment and Extraction System  (as designed, built, and already installed by BASF in 1990) ???

As of today, right now, there remains no Federal or State or Legislative
accountability, no monitoring, no compliance, and no ENFORCEMENT
to halt Toxic and Hazardous venting groundwater from being released
by BASF North Works!

Your Environmental Oversight Tax Dollars at work,
helping a polluter keep polluting til 2027 and beyond.

Thanks USEPA and EGLE Staff and Management for your
SWIFT ACTION  at BASF North Works.

BASF couldn't continue to pollute the Great Lakes without your full cooperation in extending construction timelines and ignoring Court Orders.
