We should stop and verify where we are at. We should review strategies and aims for the future and make sure that everyone can give their own contribution with the common goal of living for unity. Within the Focolare Movement, this is the opportunity offered every 5 years by the General Assembly, the first and most important governing body of the Movement that represents all the realities. The upcoming one will take place from the 1st to the 21st of March 2026. But what does the Assembly decide and how can we prepare for this moment? What steps should be taken now? In this short video you will find all the necessary details.

The General Assembly of the Work of Mary, the Focolare Movement, will take place from the 1st to the 21st of March 2026, where the new governing body of the Focolare Movement will be elected. It will be an opportunity to talk about ideas, proposals and motions that will be the guidelines for the Movement over the next five years. Through this message, Margaret Karram, President of the Focolare Movement, invites everyone to prepare for this event in a synodal way.
The new president elect of the Focolare Movement
February 1, 2021
The president of the Focolare Movement for the next six years is Margaret Karram, born 1962 in Haifa (Holy Land).
he election, which required a two-thirds majority of those present, took place on Sunday 31 January, and has been approved by the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life, in accordance with the Movement’s Statutes.
The new President – who by Statute will always be a woman – is to guide the Movement through the next six years.
The current General Assembly of the Focolare Movement, which elected the new President, is being conducted entirely online due to the pandemic. It began on January 24 and will conclude on February 7, 2021. It’s the third General Assembly since the death of founder Chiara Lubich.
359 people are taking part around the world. They represent some of the different cultures, generations, vocations, members of different churches and religous faiths who are part of the Focolare Movement.
With the election of the President, on February 1 the Co-President will be elected, who according to the Statutes must be a Focolarino priest, then the counsellors who will collaborate in the central governance of the Movement.
It will be convened from January 24 to February 7, 2021.
Due to the health emergency caused by Covid-19, the General Assembly of the Work of Mary (Focolare Movement), scheduled for September 2020, will now be convened from January 24 to February 7, 2021. This postponement has been approved by the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life.
The ordinary General Assembly is convened every six years; it is extraordinarily convened when matters that require its deliberations arise (General Statutes Art. 73, 75).
What happens during the General Assembly
The General Assembly is entrusted with four main tasks (SG, Art. 74):
1) it elects the President, the Co-President and the general Councillors;
2) it deliberates amendments to the General Statutes of the Work of Mary, which are then submitted for the approval of the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life;
3) it deliberates amendments to the Regulations of the different Branches of the Movement and to the Regulations of the General Assembly itself;
4) it deliberates on topics gathered by the Centre of the Work of Mary; these topics will be presented in a well-structured manner on behalf of the President, the General Council, a section, a branch or a movement. Every member of the General Assembly may propose for discussion other issues that relate to the life of the Work of Mary.
Chiara’s premise
Chiara Lubich wrote a premise to the General Statutes to give meaning to all its contents and therefore also to the General Assembly: “The premise to every other rule – continual mutual love, which makes unity possible and generates the presence of Jesus among those gathered in His name, is for the members of the Work of Mary the basis of their life in all its aspects: it is the norm of norms, the premise to every other rule”. (SG, p.7).

The Focolare Movement, present everywhere in the world, is like a vast and varied family. It began in 1943 during the Second World War as a current of spiritual and social renewal.
‘A people born from the Gospel,’ is how it was defined by its founder Chiara Lubich (1920-2008), a charismatic and significant woman of the 20th century.
Its purpose: to work cooperatively to build a more united world, following the inspiration of Jesus’ prayer to the Father ‘May they all be one’ (Jn 17:21), respecting and valuing diversity. It focuses on dialogue as a method, has a constant commitment to building bridges and relationships of fraternity among individuals, peoples and cultural worlds.
Persons of every age, vocation, religion, conviction and culture belong to the Focolare.
The Focolare Movement has the features of a large and varied family, of a “new people born of the Gospel”, as Chiara Lubich, its founder, defined it. It is a movement of spiritual and social renewal, founded in Trent, Italy, in 1943, during the Second World War. The Focolare Movement, officially known as the Work of Mary, was approved by the Catholic Church in 1962. It is now present in 182 nations and more than 2 million people share closely in its life and work.
It aims at spreading the message of unity worldwide. Inspired by Jesus’ prayer to the Father, “May they all be one” (Jn 17:21), its goal is to promote brotherhood and to achieve a more united world in which people respect and value diversity. To achieve this goal, people of the Movement engage in various forms of dialogue and are committed to building bridges of fraternal relationships among individuals, between cultural groups and in every area of society.
Members of the Movement include Christians of different Churches and ecclesial communities, members of the major world religions and people of no particular religious belief. Each one adheres to the Movement’s goal and spirit, while faithfully following the precepts of their own faith and conscience. At the heart of the movement are small communities of men and women who consecrate their lives to God with vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and live in separate households called “focolares”, from the Italian word for “hearth”. Married people are also members of these communities, while remaining in their families and being faithful to their commitment to marriage. They too make the same radical choice of the Gospel and offer their lives to bring unity in the world.
