BIG PICTURE!!!
Why are you here?
What's the purpose of life?
Is "there more to life than meets the eye?"
Believing there is more to life than meets the eye opens the door to the personal realization that life is a sacred journey. It enables you to see beyond the outward appearance of things and to trust in what is yet to come. Trusting that there is more to life than meets the eye is a prerequisite to living a life of hope, making it possible to go with the flow.
What will your legacy be?
Traditionally, Indigenous Peoples around the world believe in leaving a legacy of environmental stewardship -evidence that they respected and cared for nature and all plants, animals etc. They taught their children how to live with nature, how to use and take only what was absolutely necessary, and how to care for the natural world.
What does it mean to have a good life?
What is your WORLD VIEW? https://sites.google.com/view/fnmiresourcesforall/world-views
How should we treat the land, the plants and animals... each other?
“Living well is all about keeping good relations with Mother Earth and not living by domination or extraction,” says Victoria Tauli Corpuz, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
Modern western culture has only been in existence some 200 years and it’s clearly unsustainable, according to Lee Davies, a board member of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN).
“Modern education and knowledge is mainly about how to better dominate nature. It is never about how to live harmoniously with nature.
What's going to happen if we continue to expand... get bigger, faster, stronger... build more, bigger, taller.... and take more... pollute more... destroy more... want more... because that IS what we as a species is doing...
How can our current, Western way of being, continue into the next 200 years?
Should we adopt an Indigenous Worldview or a combination of both Indigenous and Western?
I think so and I'd like to open your eyes to this different way of thinking and living, a more sustainable and kinder way of going about life -taking care of the earth and all living things for the future of our children's children, like Chief Seattle said.
Maybe SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL or LESS IS MORE?
Maybe you don't need so much to be happy? Maybe you can happily live in a smaller house? Maybe you can work less? Maybe you can be grateful for what you do have? Mabye you can be satisfied with life's simply pleasures like a cozy bed or a hot shower? Maybe you can grow up to build a sustainable house or grow your own food or share the cost of a snowblower or trampoline with a neighbour?
Maybe you'll want to go bigger in a good way and create an eco-village!
An eco-village is a small, intentional, and self-sufficient community to be more economically, ecologically, and socially sustainable.
Members of eco-villages often abide by the principles of a simplified life, high thinking, and non-violence. The goal is to live in harmony and peace with nature. This includes a connection with oneself, with others, and all that surrounds us.

OLD CLASSES...

HOUSE KEEPING:
How's it going?
Attendance...
Plan: Don't stress! At this time simply keep trying to use your time wisely by creating Art and using your brains while we wait to get back to in class learning. Don't stress too much! Your marks won't go down, and could even go up IF YOU have a good attitude, communicate with me, attend the Teams meetings, and try to complete some quality art while at home. Again, if handing in your artwork through technology is too challenging, then no worries, just start a new portfolio at home and keep your 'artwork and thinking' safe until we find some way for you to share your evidence of learning...
Schedule: Teams meeting everyday at 12:30 for up to an hour. Assignments will be due by Sunday night at midnight.
Office Hours: I'm available via e-mail or Teams until 4pm. I may sometimes answer questions very late though too but don't expect it. :)
LESSON
Thinking Task:
Research and review (LEARN) The Seven Grandfather Teachings.
Go to Grandfather Teachings to learn more and/or look them up on line... watch videos, read articles etc.
Complete your sketchbook notes on each of them (we didn't finish them in class)
The video we were watching is here.... it should start at where we left off at around 11 minutes (https://youtu.be/oFPuRfqm9RY?t=661
Think of and describe your actions that have demonstrated each value, either at school, in your family, or in your community.
Write at least 2-3 full sentences to explain each action.
Hand the answers to #3 on Teams Assignments, either as a photograph or your answers in your sketchbook or a word document etc.
Hands-on Task:
Continue to work on your Seven Animals Drawings (start to make them your own style!)
Thursday, January 6, 2022.
HOUSE KEEPING:
Attendance... everyday at 12:30pm. Be there! :)
Art supplies at home? Let me know if you need anything!
Plan: Don't stress! At this time simply keep trying to use your time wisely by creating Art and using your brains while we wait to get back to in class learning. Don't stress too much! Your marks won't go down and could even go up if you have a good attitude, communicate with me, attend the Teams meetings, and try to complete some quality art while at home. Again, if handing in your artwork through technology is too challenging, then no worries, just start a new portfolio at home and keep your 'artwork and thinking' safe until we find some way for you to share your evidence of learning...

What materials could you use to make a mobile in and around your house?
Describe 7-10 materials you could use or make.
Hands-on Task:
In Google Images type "art in the snow".
What art can you create in the snow? Sometime before Sunday at midnight, go outside, find some snow or ice and create something bold and beautiful. Remember whatever you do must be more artistic than what you would have done in elementary school. The idea, details, and skills must be well developed. Get inspired by your research of snow designs online, make a plan, create it, and then take a picture of it and send it to me THROUGH ASSIGNMENTS ON TEAMS, not to my e-mail.
Sketchbook Task:
Draw these 7 line drawings of animals.
Get out your "What to look at Bookmark" or make a new one... to remember what to look at when copying something.

Power Lines -https://www.aci-iac.ca/art-books/norval-morrisseau/style-and-technique/
Morrisseau’s defining black outlines unite all aspects of the work, providing an overall assuredness to his art.
These lines perform a number of functions. In many of Morrisseau’s paintings there are “lines of communication” that “join animals and people in structured associations.
They mark relationships, often forming closed loops, almost resembling electric circuits.
In other words, these lines, which are sometimes referred to as power lines, connect the figures to one another to create a balanced composition of interrelated figures.
Another common form, created by these black lines, is the divided circle. Morrisseau included this form in his earliest works from the late 1950s, and it exists throughout his oeuvre, as in Sacred Buffalo, c. 1963, representing “all the dualities which are present in the artist’s view of the world—good and evil, day and night, heaven and earth, and so on.”8

Orange Shirt Day is a national movement in Canada. During this annual event, Indigenous and non-Indigenous people come together in the spirit of hope and reconciliation to honour residential school survivors, their families, and communities.
On this day, we learn about the impacts of the policies and actions of the Government of Canada and the churches that operated the schools. We listen to the stories of survivors and their families and remember those that didn’t make it home. https://www.uwindsor.ca/indigenous-peoples/316/orange-shirt-day

Monday, April 19, 2021.
Hi Folks,
So here we are in an on-line learning situation. Because I was on Maternity Leave for the past 2 years I missed this on-line learning/teaching experience last time. Therefore, I don't know how to do it yet but I will be learning it all very quickly this week. I'll also be making a makeshift 'office' in the barn, yes, the barn, because my house is too small... so that I can somehow hide from my darling kids!!!!! while I try to teach online.
As for you guys, rest assured your artwork is safe, your marks have been recorded, and you're free to relax for the next few days until you start your Quad 4 course on Wednesday. Your new teachers will contact you. Don't worry about a thing!!!!!
Furthermore, I am not sure yet when and how you will be able to pick up your artwork but I will hopefully get some answers this week from administration. Also, you will get a chance to glaze your work upon return to school, whenever that is, even if it is sometime next year. I will keep you pottery safe, for sure! Oh dear, Trevor! What about your cup for your mom on Mother's Day?!?!? ;)
I am sorry this has all happened like this but let's all be strong and careful for the sake of others... think of it like your social responsibility... as we navigate these challenging times. Try and make the best of it in a responsible way. Think and act positively somehow. You know I will be! It's well worth it and surprisingly easy for most people, if you simply THINK, CARE, AND TRY. :) Enjoy the spring. It's a beautiful, special time. Embrace the land, the people you care about, and the plants and animals around you. No joke. Remember what you just learned about peoples relationships to the land and the relationships lost. Your connection to the land, the people you care about, and the plants and animals around you is all that really matters. Go outside and breath the fresh air, get fit, and let the morning sun or little bird brighten your day. It'll be ok.
Take care, be smart and safe, and e-mail me if you need anything.
Kind regards,
Ms. Porter

Thursday
My biggest hopes are that I have...
a) Triggered in you a curiosity and a responsibility to look deeper into the history of this land and it's First People.
b) Inspired you to walk more kindly on this earth and protect it for generations to come
c) Role modelled a growth mindset, an open mind, and a big heart and that you will grow up to listen, be understanding, and kind in the name of peace, fresh water, and children...
oh, and that you remember how to look at things like an artist; practice patience and perseverance; and pay attention to the darks, lights, and EVERYTHING in between.
AND 1 LAST QUESTION?
Have you thought about your legacy yet today?

"When you plant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you don't blame the lettuce. You look for reasons it is not doing well. It may need fertilizer, or more water, or less sun. You never blame the lettuce. Yet, if we have problems with our friends or family, we blame the other person. But if we know how to take care of them, they will grow well, like the lettuce. Blaming has no positive effect at all, nor does trying to persuade using reason or argument. That is my experience. No blame, no reasoning, no argument, just understanding. If you understand, and you show that you will understand, you can love, and the situation will change" (THICH NHAT HANH).
