Gemma Piqué
Gemma recently finished her PhD at the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) and at the University of Lleida (UdL), under the supervision of Dr. Ramon J. Batalla (UdL) and Prof. Sergi Sabater (ICRA). She has an undergraduate degree on Geography from the University of Barcelona and a master’s degree on Soil and Water Management from the University of Lleida.
Her PhD Thesis studied hydro-sedimentary dynamics in Mediterranean rivers, both in ‘natural’ and in dammed rivers, and following a multi-temporal and spatial approach. Specifically, the Thesis focused on water and sediment fluxes in impacted rivers of the Northwestern Mediterranean region, and specifically on the rivers Muga (Eastern Pyrenees) and Isábena (Southern Pyrenees), with the objective of constructing water and sediment budgets of the drainage basins. Her research also extends to the influence of biofilm on river bed stability through laboratory experiments at the Experimental Streams Facility of the ICRA, simulating hydraulic conditions downstream from reservoirs.
Currently, she is a postdoctoral researcher at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, on the framework of her postdoctoral project “Changing rivers: The role of exotic invasive vegetation on channel morphology of Chilean rivers”. The aim of the project is to evaluate the effects of some exotic invasive species on morphological changes by means of aerial images analysis and an experiment designed to compare the resistance of different species to be removed.;
