3. Build your prototype

Invention Diagram

I enjoyed learning about the butterfly life cycle and invented cards to learn about it in a fun way.

Materials Needed

Research:

  1. Wikipedia

  2. Butterfliesandmoths.org

  3. Games:

a. Exploding Kittens

b. Pokemon

c. Yugioh!

Data Gathering tools:

  1. Excel

  2. XMind

Game Design:

  1. Labels

  2. Playing Cards

  3. Card Stock

  4. Nature Images (Wikimedia Commons) for butterfly and host plants. All nectar plants are from my backyard native plant garden!

  5. Icon Images (Microsoft Image Library)

  6. PowerPoint

Designing my Game

Now that I had all my data nicely organized in a mind map, it was time to translate it into cards.

First, I grabbed the pictures needed from wikimedia commons, and designed a card template in PowerPoint.

Next, I added the names of the Butterflies and a Minimum Pull Score (the min Pull Score required to attract said Butterfly) for each one.

After that, I added some plants.

Like last time, I added some images (from wikimedia commons) and a Pull Score. Every plant you play increases your Pull Score.

Once you have the minimum Pull Score, you can attract a Butterfly.

And finally, I reviewed it with my mom, she had some tips about tweaking some numbers or moving things around.

Here is my original cards:

Build it!

My first template of the game. I call this the 'Ancient Relic' of Flutter

1st full prototype

2nd prototype with edits after game play

I created a powerpoint card template and used images from Wikimedia and icons from Microsoft powerpoint library

  • My 2nd prototype with slight changes to card scoring and ratio of cards needed to play the game.

  • Printing my game on card stock and playing it with my parents was fun!

  • I learned a lot along the way to tweak the game. I wondered if I should be inventing a cardstock cutting tool! Phew!

  • Testing and redoing the cards was painful, but helpful to make my game better!

And... My Final 'PROTOTYPE'!

I had some help here

  • My dad created a master slide template in Power point to match label sizes.

  • I remade all the cards using the new template.

  • Mom checked them for errors.

  • My parents printed them as labels and helped me stick them on plain playing cards.

  • Mom helped me take pictures of all my cards.

I designed my cards based on a butterfly's life in my backyard garden.
