Here at Flower Farms Microschool, we preserve natural childhood because every child deserves a safe space and the freedom to explore the natural world, take healthy risk, co-create expeditionary learning, form relational connections, and develop life skills for a balanced healthy life.
In the fall of 2020, Sarah Williamson, Paige Rider and a group of dedicated families set out to form a learning pod that offered a combined in person and online instruction to continue at sense of normalcy for our children living through Covid. Nestled at the foothills of South Mountain, tucked in a old farmhouse attached to an orchard learning was fun and magical!
Flower Farms Community School began as a Prenda microschool offering personalized, project-based learning to 20-25 students. In school year 2023/2024, Flower Farms transitioned from Prenda into an independent learning program utilizing wonder-inspired methods. We're currently located in South Phoenix serving 22 students who reside throughout the valley.
Although we've moved from our original location and transitioned from Prenda, the heart and vision remain as we dream our home into reality.
Our campus is located on 2.5 acres in the heart of South Mountain neighborhood. Our farm-inspired school holds safe space for natural learning to take place. During imaginative play, students climb trees, play with balls and sticks, hunt for lizards and bugs, use hand tools and build forts structures. Explorations of the world help students form relational connections about what they experience to core academic understanding.
Wonder-inspired, expeditionary learning helps develop intrinsic motivation within a strong academic foundation, as it:
nurtures curiosity, creativity, and joyful learning fundamental to human-centered development
holds space for collaborative instruction to build cooperative spirit and project based skills
provides tools for perseverance in self-directed learning so that our students become empowered life learners
Our program inspires empathy, kindness, and mutual respect through collaborative work and play. We celebrate leaning into our vulnerability, as "fail attempts" are fundamental to resiliency, fortitude, and mastery. Our educational guides strive to meet each child where they are to fortify social emotional health and well being of young people.
Flower Farms Microschool is dedicated to guiding learning experiences that are meaningful and relevant to our young people. We are thrilled to be part of a growing micro-school movement that is reimagining what the neighborhood school could be for students, dedicated educational professionals, families and communities into the future.
