Each person experiences stroke differently.
Just like we celebrate the achievement of getting up early and making it to parkrun each Saturday, it is equally important we celebrate surviving a stroke. Did you realise that approximately 1 in 6 stroke events results in a life lost?
Looking at it from a certain point of view, it could be said that each person undergoing a stroke is handed a d6 (six-sided die) and asked to roll it.
As long as it doesn't come up as a one, that person gets to live.
Stroke is change and traumatic, no matter the outcome. Some survivors are more fortunate than others. It is not a contest but a choice.
For me,
Stroke may have broken my body,
Stroke may have broken my mind,
But I refuse to let stroke break my spirit.
My spirit stays strong so I can heal my body and my mind to the best of my ability.
I will fight stroke with every breath I take, so long as I shall live.
Damian Toohey, Stroke Survivor
Over time, I hope to add other stories of how a person has experienced stroke. Until then, here is my experience.
My name is Damian Toohey, and I suffered bleeding into the brain (Haemorrhagic stroke from a dAVF - AVM) back in July 2021 while in my early 50s.
This is my journey - There and Back Again, To Finish FAST.
