3D Printing!
3D Printing!
I Personally am new to 3D printing! But here has been my process so far when creating my 3D printed Mandalorian Armor! Why 3D Printing? 3D printing allows for highly detailed and very personalized builds! You can make what ever you want and fit it exactly to your body type. Its also a sturdy plastic and can come out looking smoother than Eva Foam.
A 3D printer, Filament, Pliers or tools that can remove supports from prints, lots of sand paper, primers, paints, any filler.
Just like the Eva Foam steps the first thing you have to do is know what you want to create! In my case again, I was set on creating a set of Mandalorian Armor. (this time better than before) I will be using all my current project to highlight each step I took. Iv linked everything 3D printing related in Helpful Resources!
What do I mean by files? Well im talking about the file that each armor piece will be under. I personally used Etsy to order parts that other people had created and then modified them in tinkercad a CAD program. I also used tinkercad to create clips that would help with strapping later down in the process.
3D printing takes a learning curve and I'm still learning, I suggest if you are new to 3D printing to definitely do the research first. There are many things to overcome before getting clean prints, and that process is something I can write about another time, but assuming your printer is working as designed print those files!!!
Step 3 and Step 4 can be done at the same time. Sanding is the most tedious part of any 3D printing project and I currently still am sanding more parts for my project. But if there's one thing I can recommend its making a list of all your parts and sanding 1 thing while another is printing. I have been sanding 1 part a night and it makes the process a lot less overwhelming.
In my experience, my sanding job isn't perfect and I still have some visible print lines. To fix this I will be using a filler primer to hopefully get rid of some of those lines that are showing. If this doesn't work dont worry we have step 6!
My dad has been really helpful throughout this project and wants to learn just as much as I do. He has been ordering different fillers in hopes of making really smooth parts. Currently wood filler has worked really well, but if we find a better solution as we continue I will add it here. Adding wood filler and then sanding it down has really made the prints look like they weren't even printed.
After adding filler obviously the first coats of primer aren't perfect anymore so we add another few layers of primer to get the parts looking good.
Its time to paint!! Painting is pretty simple. My dad and I personally use an Airbrush for the smoothest looking paint job and the parts come out looking really good. There are always minor issues like clogs, but the end result is so worth it!
Just like Eva Foam this process can be done even before sanding. Once you have a part you can do test fitting, I just personally like to do it towards the end and focus on the hardest parts first. For my 3D printing armor I have used a combination of Velcro and elastic held together by hot glue. At first I thought it would be a good temporary solution, but that was a few days ago and its still holding up well so I might just keep it!
Thats all I have for 3D printing! I am currently still working on the project with my dad, I find anything that works better or add anything else ill be sure to update it here! Hopefully this information is helpful to understand just the basic process of creating cosplays like this! I also be adding extra photos below like the EVA foam page once I finish the project!
